Information About Jacqui:
Personal Description:
I hold an English and Writing BA Hons, First Class, and a Victorian Studies M.A. In September 2010 I will embark upon a PhD at Leicester University. My research area will be adaptations of the novels of Charles Dickens. I can offer tuition in my own home or in the student's home. I am willing to offer tuition on a long term basis where a student requires help developing core skills in the subject, confidence and / or motivation. I am also willing to offer short term tutoring to help with a specific area of difficulty.
Teaching Experience:
I have provided individual tuition in English Literature to AS / A Level candidates and university undergraduates for the past four years. I also have ten years experience of teaching thinking skills, citizenship, and literacy to adults and children. I have excellent skills in developing self-confidence in my students as well as skills in motivating and engaging students who have become disaffected with a particular subject.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that the key to teaching and motivating students is communicating my own enthusiasm for the subject. To this end I believe that lessons should be structured enough to meet the aims and learning outcomes (which are always clearly identified) but flexible enough to allow the young person to pursue their own academic ideas. Only when both aims are met can real learning occur. My focus is to help each student gain confidence in their own ability. I provide homework where appropriate, which either consolidates the previous lesson's learning or involves preparation for the next lesson.
