Chris - Leeds tutor
Information About Chris:
Personal Description:
I am 23 years old, originally from Oxford and currently living in Leeds. I first arrived here in 2005 to study a degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering which I completed in 2009. I then spent 8 months training as a teacher in secondary schools teaching Maths to children from the age of 11-18, teaching in Pudsey and Harrogate. Whilst I loved the classroom experience, I did not take well to the school system and quit teaching in April. I have been tutoring on the side for the duration of my studies and training, and continue this especially because it allows me to still teaching without having to deal with the high pressure, high stress environment of state schooling.
I am also a big music fan and have been playing and teaching musical instruments for many years. I play the piano, guitar and harmonica, as well as doing some singing. Recently I play some festival dates in the US with my current Leeds-based band, Manning.
The bottom line is that I love to learn, and I love helping people to learn. I will happily sit down with people of all ages from young children to adults, and I pride myself on having the empathy and the patience to work constructively with people, to help them achieve their full potential!
Teaching Experience:
I first started tutoring when I was 17 and taught a total of 15 students on a weekly basis (as well as working a 50 hour a week job!). When I moved to Leeds the guitar tuition fell by the way side, but I did manage to do some Maths and Physics tutoring whilst studying.
Over the past year I undertook months of full-time teacher training in schools in Yorkshire teaching Maths to children of all ages and all abilities, including Special Needs students, including severe dyspraxia and dyslexia. Over these months I learnt to play my lessons thoroughly and scrutinise my own teaching methods and abilities. I learnt to use a variety of resources and pedagogies in my teaching and learnt a great deal about child learning and the psychology behind education.
Tutoring Approach:
Teaching is a meaningless activity if the student does not want to learn, but despite what many people believe to be true, many disaffected learners really do want to do well - they just also don't want to lose face. This is fundamental to my approach. The student has to be fully involved in the process and the design of the lesson, students need to, where possible, identify their own weaknesses. A sense of ownership in the learning process is vital for any sense of real achievement to flourish. To this end I try my best to work WITH the pupil and not FOR them. I try my best to allow them to see me more as a peer, someone to help, rather than a superior there to 'sort them out'. This involves mutual respect and it is this vein that I always maintain a relaxed composure and try to make use of the student in finding out the best way they will learn, as well as what it is they want to learn.
