Personal Statement

For many years my heart has been set on a career in teaching and to this end I have undertaken various teaching activities throughout my academic life.

At secondary school I became aware of my gift for explaining complex ideas to others, especially in the field of Mathematics, when my classmates would come to me for clarification of the 'harder questions' rather than going to the teacher. Helping them to access the work always gave me a sense of pride and fulfilment.
At college, I sought further opportunities to pursue my passion for helping others to learn. As a student union member I regularly worked as a classroom assistant, which developed my insight into how to adapt my approach according to each individual's personal learning style.
The sense of achievement and satisfaction that I derived from this experience inspired me to join the Student Associated Scheme two years ago. This involved a fifteen day placement at Ebrahim College. My role included supporting and motivating small groups of less able pupils who were struggling with their work. I enjoyed the challenge of making lesson plans and preparing teaching materials to support the pupils' learning. I used my creative skills to come up with innovative ways to teach, increase students' self-confidence and combat disaffection. I believe the key to successful teaching is combining learning with enjoyment and empowering young people to gain the cognitive skills and self-belief required to enable them to make ongoing progress as independent learners.

In my Mathematics degree, I had to deliver results on a daily basis. In one occasion I was chosen to be the group leader of a project which was part of our 'Sampling Survey and Simulation' module. I successfully motivated and organized the group to prepare four assignments, each with a one week deadline. My role involved organizing meetings, ensuring that everyone attended, and (after group consensus) assigning all group members a task reflecting their abilities and interests. I was proud of the part I played in creating a positive working environment and ensuring that we met our deadlines. On completion of the project, all four of our assignments were awarded grade 'A's. This demonstrated my ability to use my initiative, sustain a sense of focus and commitment, lead by example, motivate others, work effectively as part of a team and rise to a challenge.

Furthermore, during the last two years of my studies at Queen Mary I had been a Peer Assisted Study Support mentor, helping First Year Mathematics Undergraduate students make the transition from college to university and providing them with advice and support tailored to their needs. I thrive on combining my mathematical knowledge and my communication skills to assist them with their coursework and interpret their lecture notes on modules like fundamentals of statistics, probability and calculus. I found these weekly sessions extremely rewarding as I really enjoy imparting the knowledge that I have acquired, not only in order to help others but also to consolidate and extend my own understanding.

Upon completing my Mathematics degree, I straightway applied for the PGCE course and have been accepted at University of East London (UEL),

I have now successfully completed my first placement with a wonderful report from my mentor at Sweyne Park School in Rayleigh, Essex.
I am currently finishing of my final placement at Langdon School, East Ham.

Having recently received a degree award from Queen Mary (University of London) in the field of Mathematics, I believe my subject knowledge is very strong and therefore I am more than capable of teaching up to A-level mathematics.
In conclusion I feel I have the require knowledge and skills for teaching Mathematics as a private tutor.

Teaching Experience:

At present I am working on a (PGCE) 60% of a teachers timetable where I prepare and deliver lesson to classes ranging from year 7 to 10. At the moment we are preparing our year 9 and 10 for their GCSE modular exams. I also work as a form tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy helping pupils to improve their understanding and their capabilities, and I am considered to have a gift in explaining concepts to students which gives them a very detail understanding of maths.
