Alma - Hackney tutor
Information About Alma:
Personal Description:
I am bilingual in French and English. I grew up in France and always spoke English to my Father. After my baccalaureat I moved to London where I did a joint degree in the school of oriental and african studies, university of london. I thus have a deep understanding of both languages, including of the implications of specific lexisons. I also work as a translator, most recently to translate a PhD thesis in English and texts related to disability, thus to the very different meanings attached to an understanding of the body.
I have studied German at school in France for eight years and traveled there several times, thus giving me a good knowledge of the language. I always liked this language and thus remember it well and I understand and can explain the grammar, conjugaison and sentence structure up until GCSE level.
I also learnt Italian at school and had a keen interest in it. I lived in Florence during my gap year, visit friends there and still speak the language well. I know the functionning of the language and can thus teach it up to GCSE level.
Teaching Experience:
I started working as a tutor when I was in high school. One of my pupils was a 14-year-old boy experiencing real difficulties in maths. We worked together for almost a year and his level progressed a lot, he started to recieve good results in school quite quickly. I also helped an 11-year-old girl with her homework, yet whilst focusing on Spanish. Although I have never learnt that language, I would help her concentrate and find the time for homework.
I worked in a secondary school in North London as a teaching assistant in French lessons. I started as part of the student associate sheme therefore my time there was limited by the program. Nonetheless the MFL staff asked me several times if I would continue there and gave me very positive feedback on my work. This allowed me to find techniques to interest students in a topic they had real difficulties in.
Tutoring Approach:
It is central to find a way to interest a pupil in a subject, thus rather than arriving with a fixed program I like to engage with what the pupil needs or likes, be it music, poems, conversations, books or articles. Languages are alive and dynamic but I believe in being able to talk it as well as read and write. This, whilst introducing vocabulary, grammar and conjugaison. I am patient and understand that repetition is the key. I will thus give short excercices for people to do in their own time so as to critalise what the lesson introduced. The following lesson will also have start with a short overview of what has been acquired to that date
