Information About Charles:

Personal Description:

Having graduated from Oxford with a First in Classics, I am now on the Teach First Leadership Development Programme. This involves teaching at a secondary school in Birmingham, seeking to develop as a teacher and ultimately, a leader. I love my subject but I particularly love teaching it, as it allows me to be intellectually stimulated while seeking to impart to others some of the reasons Classics inspires me. In fact, I enjoy teaching anything, engaging with young people and developing their talents. This is why my main subject on Teach First is actually Maths, a subject which I feel allows young people to open doors in their future lives.
Having scored 598 out of 600 at A level English Lit., and come in the top 5 in the country for GCSE English Language, I would also be happy to teach either English Language or Literature: my degree has allowed me to continue my passion for both the intricacies of language and the wider possibilities of texts.
It is worth pointing out that I live in Birmingham but am down quite often in London.

Teaching Experience:

I taught at a secondary school during my gap year for 5 months, where I was active in the classroom assisting the teaching. I even held some lessons unsupervised, of classes up to AS level, and found it hugely rewarding.
Later I volunteered at a Kindergarten in Israel for a month, gaining some valuable experience teaching younger children. Despite some language difficulties, I found I was able to contribute meaningfully.
I have done one-to-one tutoring for children ranging in age from 8 to 18, on both a residential and visiting basis.
I have recently been accepted onto the Teach First Leadership Development Programme, a 2-year scheme for teacher training where participants work towards a PGCE whilst working in some of the most deprived schools in the country.

Tutoring Approach:

Both as a student and a tutor I have found that private tuition is an ideal complement to the classroom - it allows individuals to shine in ways one may not expect, and provides an opportunity to work closely on exactly what the student needs.
I start by trying to get an accurate picture of a student's work and situation, by reading some of their work beforehand and/or having a detailed conversation, enabling me to proceed on a personal basis. I believe firmly in the value of a thorough knowledge of grammar, syntax and idiom, so seek to enthuse the pupil with the pleasure that comes from understanding how these work. In addition, the more creative aspects of my subjects allow for lively debate, to which I also attribute great importance.
With such an approach I hope to give education and enjoyment: the fundamental aim for me is that the experience of learning with a tutor goes beyond anything the pupil has experienced before in the subject.
