Information About Sarah:

Personal Description:

A recent graduate in English Language and Literature, I love books but I love working with people too, which makes teaching very enjoyable for me! As a young child I struggled to learn to read at school and it took extra-curricular support for me to catch up with my peers. In terms of academic success I've never looked back since then, but I can really relate to the frustration that many students feel when they know they aren't achieving their full potential. Currently I work full-time as a Youth Projects Manager and am saving up to do an MA in English Literature and Creative Writing. Apart from reading and writing I enjoy cooking, cycling and drawing. I have lived abroad in several countries and enjoy learning languages; I speak intermediate French, Italian and Hebrew.

Teaching Experience:

I already tutor privately, mainly for English GCSE, and I have previously taught or assisted in the teaching of a Jewish Studies GCSE course for five years. Until recently my job as as a youth worker also entailed devising and teaching weekly courses in youth leadership for teenagers, and I have delivered these to over 40 youths over the past year. I worked as a paid English teacher on an Italian school's summer camp in Umbria two years ago, and I have also worked as a full-time teaching assistant at a secondary school in the borough of Haringey. On a voluntary basis I have taught English Language overseas to both adults and children for three months. In terms of University-level students, my proofreading and editing skills are excellent and whilst an undergraduate I worked part-time as a proofreader at a large company that designed learning programs.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring Approach: Friendly and creative, I am passionate about English and skilled at making the study of literature and language both accessible and fun. I am particularly strong on exam techniques and preparation, and believe that many English students could achieve better at exam level if given the correct skills and structure for their knowledge. A typical course of lessons with me would involve looking through your work to see what could be improved, talking to you about your interests and learning style, and then designing a program of study for the next few months that would really tackle your problem spots, from creating mind-maps or discussing a text all the way through to memorising flashcards and writing practise essays in the run-up to an exam. For assistance in improving your general level of English I can provide games and exercises that develop vocabulary, grammar and spelling
