Personal Description:

I am a recent Masters graduate in European Literature and Culture (specialised in Italian), with an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Italian Studies. I learned Italian from scratch when I started university, and have since become fluent and lived in Italy for more than two years. As a result I can empathise fully with the difficulties of learning Italian from an English perspective. I have a real passion for learning and teaching language skills, and I am keen to pass on some techniques given to me by a very good teacher! As an arts/humanities student I enjoy helping people to get the most out of literature and critical thinking.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience as an English language assistant, and I have done private tutoring, for English and Italian, and mentoring young adults.

Tutoring Approach:

For Italian, I believe that formal grammar is essential, and that it can be fun to learn. The first step is to begin to understand how Italian is structurally different from English, and afterwards it becomes ever easier and more enjoyable.

For literature and philosophy, my approach is based mainly on a relaxed conversation, focused on a central issue or question relevant to the literature. I place a very important emphasis on summarising and clarifying the results and achievements of the conversation. It is important to be able to answer questions such as: do I agree with the author/character?; Why/why not?; How has my opinion changed?
