Rory - Cambridge tutor
Information About Rory:
Personal Description:
I am engaged and accomplished in the subjects in which I offer tutoring: Maths, Latin and Ancient Greek I am currently studying Classics at Cambridge University, and the majority of the course is focused on the languages of Latin and Ancient Greek. I studied Maths and Further Maths at A level and achieved a score of over 90% in each, dropping only 9 marks out of 600 in the entire Maths A level.
Within the Maths and Further Maths A levels, the modules I have most experience with are: C1, C2, C3, C4, S1, M1, M2, M3, DE, FP1, FP2 and FP3, although with prior notice I can also tutor in other modules.
Within the subjects of Latin and Ancient Greek I can offer tutoring related to: Latin to English and Greek to English translation (such as the 'unseen' passages which feature in the GCSEs and A levels); English to Latin and English to Greek translation (which is an optional part of the A level but is very beneficial for increasing confidence and ability with translation); set text study; comprehension questions such as those found in the A2 for Latin and Ancient Greek.
Teaching Experience:
I have spent time tutoring other A level school students in Maths on a one-to-one basis, and due to taking the Maths and Further Maths A levels both in one year, there was not sufficient time to cover all of the relevant material in classes, so much of it I taught myself. Although I did not study English to Latin or English to Greek translation at A level, I have since taught myself sufficiently to sit university exams and to tutor in the subjects. I implement the teaching methods which I used to teach myself in tutoring other students.
Tutoring Approach:
Having taken the relevant A level and GCSE examinations in the last few years, I have a very close knowledge of the syllabus for each subject, which is essential for giving helpful tutoring to students. I think that being only a few years older than my students helps form a good tutor-student relationship, which significantly helps learning - this process of forming a report can be more difficult with older tutors.
Many tutors may not be fully aware of the recent changes in the structuring of most A levels, with a total of 4 modules rather than 6, and the rearrangement of the teaching material into fewer modules. It cannot be ignored how great a role exam technique plays in GCSEs and A levels at the moment, for better or worse, and this is included as a part of my tutoring - I can tutor purely with the aim of improvement at the subject, or with the additional aim of gaining high exam grades through discussion of exam technique, whichever is desired.
