Information About Joanna:

Personal Description:

I am a graduate from the University of Warwick and hold both an MA and a BA (Hons) in English Literature. I am offering private lessons to anyone who wishes to receive additional support with their English studies. I have experience of providing individual tuition and I am familiar with a wide range of texts and authors, as well as the technical demands of essay writing. I have also studied Creative Writing at a high level and can offer guidance with this area. My experience has made me aware of the difficulties that students face when trying to succeed at this subject and I am keen to help students overcome these problems and realise the fulfilment that reading great literature can bring.

I offer lessons at my own home in Lordswood and I am also willing to travel to teach in homes within a maximum of 5 miles. Please note that there will be an additional charge for these lessons in order to cover my travelling expenses. I generally only travel to the tutee's home after 7pm in the evenings and I only have a limited number of spaces for students who require this service. Please note these spaces are currrently filling up fast.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently providing tuition to students at A Level and GCSE, working with them on areas such as essay writing and reading comprehension. I am also working with pupils at primary level. In particular I have experience of working with students who struggle with reading and writing and helping them find ways to overcome their difficulties. I work at Chatham Dockyard as an Education Assistant, where I help to deliver learning sessions to schools. I have also spent time in local secondary schools where I have provided English lessons at KS3 and GCSE level. Furthermore I have experience of working as a primary classroom assistant and at university I helped to organise creative writing workshops for local primary school children. Over the last few years I have gained a great deal of tutoring experience in many different contexts. For example I proof-read work for university students and I also tutored my younger brother through his English GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:

As a young tutor I can connect with students on their own level, being able to remember myself what the demands of coursework and examinations were like. I aim to provide lessons that are stimulating and tailored towards the individual concerns and needs of each student. As someone who is deeply passionate about their area of expertise I am eager to pass on this enthusiasm to my students. I regard English as a subject that helps to develop vital skills that students will need at university and in the workplace, but also as a subject that can offer a great opportunity for personal development. I encourage students to bring their own experiences to bear upon their work and make the subject their own. I am of course concerned with encouraging learners to perform in examinations at the highest level possible, but in my experience this cannot happen unless the student is sufficiently motivated and inspired by what they read.
