Leah - Cambridge tutor
Information About Leah:
Personal Description:
I am Australian, 25 years of age and have a rich history of experience working with children in educational and other capacities.
I am passionate about the education of children, enthusiastic, hard-working and dedicated.
I love to travel, meet and experience other cultures and as a result majored in Sociology/Anthropology and Linguistics in my Social Science degree back home. I am more than happy to work with migrant students who may be struggling at school due to language/cultural difficulties and differences.
I also have a rich background in the arts and music, can play the cello and piano, love to sing and am fairly accomplished at drawing/painting. This is due to my family environment as well as the school I attended which emphasised these things.
I am into fitness and healthy living!
Teaching Experience:
I am currently working as a primary supply teacher in the Cambridgeshire area.
Prior to this, for the duration of 2009 I undertook my Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Australia, and in the process completed student teacher placements in 3 very different primary schools and settings for a total of 80 days.
These included working with a year 5/6 Intensive English Unit class (Migrant/refugee children); a year 4/5 class in a Steiner school and a year 2 class at an Infants school (Kindergarten to year 2).
On each placement I was responsible for planning, teaching and assessing student work.
Prior to this, and whilst studying for my bachelor's degree, I worked on and off for 4 years as a teacher's assistant at a Steiner school, working with students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and assisting across all curriculum areas. I also tutored cello and High-School level mathematics (again, up to year 12).
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is to build up confidence in students that they are capable and able to accomplish their personal goals as well as goals set by the education system.
For struggling students I achieve this by stripping down the subject/topic to its basic components and slowly building it up again, ensuring the child is with me and comprehending each step of the way.
There is never any kind of belittling or display of frustration as this only inhibits the child's confidence and self-worth.
I believe in a whole-person approach whereby I capitalise on the the student's strengths and use this to improve their weaker areas.
For gifted students, there needs to be sufficient stimulation and challenges set to ensure that their interest is maintained and their abilities do not plateau.
