Youssof - Hammersmith tutor
Information About Youssof:
Personal Description:
I am currently a 5th year graduate medical student studying at Imperial College London, having previously attended the University of Warwick where I graduated top of my class with a 1st class honours.
Personality wise, I am a very friendly, outgoing and always keen to meet new people and travel to new places. My passion for travelling has put me into contact with many different types of peoples and cultures and thus has made me into a very multi-cultural individual. This has given me the ability to be able to befriend people very quickly but also to be able to connect with them and earn their trust.
Teaching Experience:
5 years personal tutoring experience - I have taught a broad range of children from KS3 to GCSE and A-levels.
I have extensive experience dealing with dyslexic and to a lesser extent those who are disabled. With my dyslexic student i managed to raise his GCSE grades by an average of 2 boundaries, from C to A/A*.
I also have some experience in small group teaching both at University level and also at GCSE.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to give students the freedom to tell me what they are uncertain about and what they think they need help on.
Taking this information I then try to deduce how much of the essential pre-requisite skills and abilities the student has and working closely with them try to see where the mis-understanding stems from. After having ascertained this I work with the student in order to teach them how to overcome the uncertainty and be confident in their ability.
If one of their basic skills is lacking, I will first endeavour to bring that skill up to scratch before proceeding to tackle the bigger problem as I believe that a firm foundation in the basics is fundamental before being able to move onto more complex issues.
I do not like to take lead in any tutoring session nor do I answer questions with just straight answers. Rather I try to help the students work the answers to their own questions by simple reasoning and a logical process; utilising their own skills and problem solving abilities to break down what appear to be complex problem into a series of simple tasks.
I have found that this approach enables the student to gain much greater confidence in their own skills and abilities and removes the somewhat artificial and short-lived gain they get from working with a tutor who merely gives them the answer. This approach enables them to gain educational independence and allows them to solve problems on their own, especially in cases of seeing new material, by having confidence in their own ability and skills. Such confidence is lacking in many students, who are otherwise very academically sound.
Having also been a student myself, I know exactly what is required by the exam boards and examiners. I also help the students with revision tips and exam techniques when the time for them approaches, helping them cut down on the excess material that is questionable and helping them to learn what is important for their understanding and future.
