John - Glasgow tutor

Information About John:

Personal Description:

I am a friendly 26 year-old native English speaker, from Glasgow. I am in my third and final year of my PhD in philosophy at the University of Dundee. I still live in Glasgow and travel to Dundee most Wednesdays. I have done various jobs, including teaching, bar work, nannying and library work. I have recently returned from Paris, where I lived for two months. I got involved in various projects in Paris, including work with the European Independent Film Festival.

Teaching Experience:

I worked for two semesters as a university tutor at the University of Dundee. I taught classes of undergraduate students: Semester 1: Plato / Critical Thinking
Semester 2: Foundations of Modern Philosophy /Introduction to Modern Political Theory
In addition to teaching classes of undergraduate students, my duties included keeping office hours, attending departmental meetings, organising research seminars and marking papers.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a relaxed, but firm approach to tutoring; I feel that a comfortable atmosphere is essential for learning. But I strive to make sure that this atmosphere does not lead to complacency. I expect my students to do the work I set for them (often the work set will be decided by both the student and myself, as I expect a degree of responsibility from the student - this, of course, applies for older students).
