Roy - Leeds tutor

Information About Roy:

Personal Description:

I am 64 years old with a lot of experience in maths (see below). For more than 20 years, I worked in foreign aid programmes in different African countries. I like problem-solving of all kinds. I also play the guitar badly, mainly blues and pop from the 1960s; in addition, I like to go walking in the Yorkshire dales, to push myself physically. I also occasionally play badminton and swim (not simultaneously), and enjoy using the computer for various activities from Photoshop to Visual Basic programming. I am self-taught in electronics, and am always trying to create new gadgets, much to my wife's annoyance.

Teaching Experience:

I taught maths at secondary school level between 1968 and 2000. In that time, I also worked as a teacher trainer of maths teachers, and as a lecturer in first-year maths at university. Since 2000, my main work has been in educational planning with a local authority, but I have also worked as a GCSE exam marker and as an Open University tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I love the challenge of maths, of trying to solve problems, of using my brain to see how to approach a new puzzle, and it is this enthusiasm that I try to share with students. I believe everybody is capable of learning maths at least up to GCSE Grade A, once they have been helped to overcome some of their barriers to learning. I help students identify what and how to study, and to identify areas of weakness in their background knowledge. I believe that the main way of learning maths is by doing maths - not tedious exercises, but a carefully arranged sequence of problems that develop concepts and understanding.
