Marie - Manchester tutor

Information About Marie:

Personal Description:

I am a student at the University of Manchester currently in my second year studying French and Spanish. I love learning languages, and this year I studying Portuguese as part of my course. I love the French culture too and I'd like to transmit this to my students; I believe that learning languages is highly important, especially in the current climate where language learning is often neglected in schools, particularly the oral aspect. I am preparing for my year abroad this September (2010), where I plan to be a teaching assistant. I am a talented student, with 4 A grade A levels in French, English Literature, History and General Studies, and an A in AS level Mathematics. I therefore have the knowledge of how to succeed at both GCSE and A level, including essay-writing skills and useful grammar, both of which have been enhanced by my university degree. I obtained a Distinction in the Advanced Extension Award in French and a good grade in my first year at university of a 2:1, with firsts in some of my units. I am very committed, for example, I have a black belt in tae kwon-do, which took 10 practical examinations and 5 years to achieve!

Teaching Experience:

I organised work experience in a campsite in France, where I was entertaining children through games and activities. I take part in mentoring through an online website, advising young people about their educational paths and anything else they wish to talk about. I am currently studying a variety of content units, so as well as language skills, I am educated in the culture of both France and Spain. I am friendly and patient, having grown up with my disabled brother, and I have always enjoyed helping my peers if they've needed it. I am currently taking part in a weekly volunteering mentoring program in a primary school in Wythenshawe, which involves one-on-one contact with children, encouraging them to achieve their goals. I am also studying for an OCN mentoring qualification through this volunteering. I have received further facilitation training through my part-time job as a student ambassador for the University of Manchester, where I can get involved in projects encouraging local children to pursue higher education.

Tutoring Approach:

I know how daunting it can be speaking in front of a large class, and through one-on-one tutoring, I aim to enhance my students' confidence with oral, grammatical and written French. I am a great believer in tailoring learning to be fun; for example, after six sessions of concentrated work, I might plan a session watching a foreign film, noting new vocabulary then discussing the themes of the film afterwards. I focus on students' weaknesses, with emphasis on pronunciation, to equip them with not only the skills to do well academically, but the skills to prepare them for spending time in France.
I also aim to make my lessons relevant; using subject matter to do with French or Spanish culture, including music, food and cinema, as well as history, depending on the student's wishes, enabling them to develop a passion for the languages and countries too. Most importantly, I am flexible, and as a student myself, I know that each individual has different needs- my classes will therefore be tailored accordingly.
