David - Market Weigton tutor

Information About David:

Personal Description:

I am 59 years old, a happy retiree from the academic rat-race, but one who is pleased to have had a moderately successful career as a biologist. In the later years of my academic life, I tired of the rampant bureaucracy, corporatism and political correctness of educational establishments, and I now enjoy putting these distractions aside and helping my tutees to enjoy the fascinations of biology.

Teaching Experience:

I have 30 years' experience as a University teacher and researcher, specialising in Environmental Biology, Ecology and Toxicology, but with a broad general experience of many other areas of Biology including general and systematic zoology, comparative animal physiology, cell biology and biostatistics. I left my last position as Reader in Applied Hydrobiology when my Department was closed, and since that time I have held a number of temporary positions in local colleges, teaching A-level Biology. This has familiarised me with the A-level syllabus and broadened my experience of working with a younger age group.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience has led me to believe that most Biology syllabuses are bizarre, and can appear pointless and intellectually unsatisfying to many students, making the subject appear boring and lacking in coherence. I try to start from the student's own areas of greatest interest, or his/her perceived difficulties, and to develop them into a broad understanding of the unifying principles of Biology - believe it or not, these principles do exist, in spite of the fact that most syllabuses manage to conceal them.
