Emma - Oxford tutor
Information About Emma:
Personal Description:
I am just about to begin my final year at St John's College, Oxford University, after which I shall have completed my Master of Chemistry degree. Having achieved 10A* grades at GCSE and 5 A's at A-level, including a number of awards for the top marks nationally in Chemistry, Biology and Classical Civilisation, I feel that I will be able to use my academic abilities to bring out the best in others who are striving to succeed, and hopefully encourage them to see their studies with the same passion and motivation as I have always done.
I am a keen sportswoman and musician, having competed nationally in various swimming competitions and played in a number of orchestras and ensembles. The teamwork and determination this has given me has helped with my studies and also contributes to the strong inter-personal skills I feel I have developed.
I am reliable, honest and hardworking, but always strive to bring out the best in others, whatever aspect of their life this may relate to. I enjoy variety in my life, and feel that my interests outside of my studies have helped to keep a balanced yet focused mind, but always understanding that my academics are my priority. I recently completed a six-month internship in Investment Banking in London with JPMorgan, which has helped to open my eyes to the world post-study and has helped to further develop my outlook on academia ad current issues.
I am eager to push myself to new limits, and hence combined my interest in charity work with my sporting abilities by swimming from Europe to Africa in September 2008 for World Cancer Research.
Teaching Experience:
I have a vast and varied amount of experience in both tutoring and interview coaching. Whilst at school, I mentored younger students up to GCSE and A Level standard in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths and Latin.
I held revision classes at lunchtime for GCSE students in Chemistry and Biology, devising the lesson plans myself and constructing detailed revision notes and practice question/answer booklets for all students. I also tutored students on a one-on-one basis in a variety of subjects by requests from teachers and also students themselves.
My willingness to give up my lunch-hours and freetime after school, which was minimal, should hopefully show my dedication to helping others to the best of my ability.
Whilst I have been at University, I have tutored a number of students of various levels. This includes those wishing to apply to Oxford, in which case I have given over 100 hours of private tuition sessions and advanced Chemistry coaching to help with interview preparations. I have also conducted over 300 mock interviews for a variety of subjects, including Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Medicine, Engineering, Economics and Natural Sciences.
I am very proud to say that all those students that I have closely tutored were give offers from Oxford, and those I tutored during my time at school achieved much higher than their predicted grades; most successfully gaining A and A* grades in what were considered to be their 'weaker subjects'.
Tutoring Approach:
As I hope to have illustrated, I am highly devoted to bringing out the best in all fellow students and tutees and strive for the optimum results 100% of the time. I am patient, relaxed and approachable, which I feel are all essential qualities a tutor should possess.
I am focused and motivated and reflect this attitude upon my students and tutees, urging them to approach their work in the same way. I feel that one of my greatest strengths is my ability to regonise the individual needs of each student and tailor all tutoring towards their specific needs. Whether this is the way in which I approach the tutorial sessions or the manner in which I present the context and information, individuality is an extremely important aspect to the success of each student and I take a great deal of time tailoring each programme accordingly.
I like to create a personal yet professional relationship with each student so that they should feel at ease talking to me if they continue to face problems with their studies.
PLEASE NOTE
I will be available for tutoring in Birmingham also.
