Emma - Southend tutor

Information About Emma:

Personal Description:

I am a young, enthusiastic History teacher with a great deal of experience of working with young people.
I have always loved to teach and aspired to be a teacher from a young age. I qualified as a Dance Teacher in 2001 and regularly helped teach the students at my local dance school, which encouraged me further with my career.
During my summer holidays from College and University, I helped out with a Summer School held at my local Secondary School.
It was my own History teachers at Secondary School that inspired me to specialise in one subject. Their enthusiasm for the subject and teaching methods encouraged me in my chosen career. I really hope I am inspiring my own students in this way.

Teaching Experience:

I gained a degree in Contemporary History from the University of Essex in 2004 and gained a PGCE from ARU in 2005. Since July 2005, I have been working in an 'Outstanding' Secondary school in Westcliff on Sea for 4 years. Recently the History department received a 'Good with Outstanding Features' report from Ofsted.

I currently teach years 7-13 in mixed ability classes so I am able to differentiate according to need.

At GCSE I have taught the Edexcel B syllabus, (British Social and Economic History); in particular Agriculture 1700-1900. Transport and Leisure 1700-1900 and Votes for Women.
From September 2009 I will be teaching the Edexcel Modern World Syllabus, in particular; International Relations, Weimar and Nazi Germany, and US Civil Rights. I have also been accepted to become an examiner in 2010 which will enable me to gain further experience in this field.

At A' Level, I have taught 'Britain 1916-1939', 'Lenin and the Bolsheviks 1903-1924' and 'The Experience of Warfare, 1854-1918'

Tutoring Experience:

1 year tutoring a Year 11 pupil for GCSE History.

Tutoring Approach:

As a teacher I am aware that all students have a varying range of needs and thus will require an individualised approach to learning. I always ensure I include activities for all types of learners; whether they prefer a more visual, auditory or kinaesthetic approach. I am very patient with all my students.

For GCSE/A Level tutoring, I will discuss with the student what they feel they need from our sessions. It may be they would like to consoldiate knowledge learned at school, or perhaps to focus on exam strategies and essay writing skills.

I always make sure I am aware of the specification they are studying, and purchase past papers and mark schemes to allow students to become familiar with the layout of the exam.

For primary tutoring, I am willing to help children with reading, spelling, grammar and other aspects of the Primary National Curriculum.

I would prefer to tutor from my own home although I am willing to discuss this with potential tutees and their parents/guardians.
