Information About Ying:

Personal Description:

Having received a B.Ed in Primary Education in Canada, I first came to the UK to pursue further graduate studies in Cambridge University. I've always really enjoyed teaching, in all levels and forms, and have always tried to be involved in it in one way or another. I am currently working for an architecture company in the public sector, but am still looking for ways in which I can be closer to the teaching environment. Being that English is a second language for me as well, I can understand the difficulties and hardships that exist when learning to communicate with others, and can completely empathise. Whether it be for recreation or a specific purpose, I'd love to be involved in tutoring one on one, or in groups, to help learners through the process.

Teaching Experience:

Since obtaining a Bachelor of Education at McGill Unviersity, I've tried to involve myself within either tutoring or teaching atmospheres ever since. I've taught in both primary and secondary schools in Montreal, Quebec, and have started after school programmes for students. I have taught weekend art and drawing classes to primary school students in a local Chinese school in New Jersey, USA, and have also organised an art exhibition to showcase their work. In addition, I've been hired by private families to tutor their children in both English and Mandarin on a one on one basis. I have a TESL qualification and have also previously volunteered teaching vulnerable women at the Womens YMCA in Montreal. Most recently, in December, I have traveled to Beijing as part of the Cambridge University's Education Without Borders Committee to teach English in a high school in Beijing for two weeks.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is very student based. Both in and out of the classroom scenario, I strongly believe that students have the right to dictate and negociate their learning. This allows them to take ownership of their own learning strategies, and thus, monitor their own progress. My belief is that teachers should try to provide whatever resources and methods that aid the student in this process. Teachers can only steer the direction of learning, not choose it. I also believe that students and teachers should work together to establish their learning agenda, and cooperate to make the experience both meaningful and enjoyable.
