Information About Jon:


Personal Description:

I am at present studying for a Masters degree at the University of York in composition. I graduated from York with a first class music degree in 2008. I completed A levels as a mature student at night school, achieving AAB in History, Music and English literature. I also have grade 8 piano. I am an experienced composer, theatre sound designer and singer, and regularly perform with a number of ensembles at the University and in York. The University of York music degree has high academic standards, and has helped me to develop strong research and writing skills.



Teaching Experience:

I have run regular music workshops in York primary schools over the last few years. The most recent was a Javanese Gamelan workshop with local primary children at the University in March 2009. I have also taught piano to children in York and London.



Tutoring Approach:

I believe strongly that a very important quality in a teacher is the ability to communicate effectively. It is important to understand how significant the relationship between teacher and pupil is, and how strongly this effects the learning process. The most important thing is to listen to any individual pupil and understand what there particular needs and interests are, try to understand their individual way of learning. If a pupil is not learning and progressing, it is always the teacher's fault. It is not good enough just to blame the pupil - a teacher is paid to teach, to inspire the pupil to learn and to work, and if the pupil is not doing so, it is the teacher's failure in my opinion.
