Andy - Leeds tutor

Information About Andy:

Personal Description:

I came to university in Leeds and liked it so much that I stayed - apart from spending 10 years in Brazil doing development work. I'm married and have two teenage daughters. I play badminton, cycle and walk in the country to keep fit. Hobbies include playing the guitar, singing and digital photography. I enjoy meeting people from other cultures whether at home or abroad and am on the leadership team of the International Students' Club at the University of Leeds.

Teaching Experience:

I trained as a primary teacher and taught in Key Stage 2 before taking a masters degree and moving abroad. Whilst in Brazil I did a lot of informal teaching across various age ranges and since returning I have taught at secondary level. My greatest success in tutoring was when a would-be teacher passed GCSE maths on the 4 attempt and went on to do a PGCE.

Tutoring Approach:

For children that are struggling with their schoolwork I prefer to use text books from the pupil's school to go over what has been covered in recent lessons. I like to vary the work during my lesson to help maintain concentration and I try to apply key concepts to the child's interests. I believe in paying attention to neatness and correct grammar, and find that children respond well to encouragement and challenges.
I haven't yet done any Portuguese tutoring but look forward to the opportunity soon.
