Information About Rachel:

Personal Description:

I am a student in my final year of a Primary Teaching degree at the University of Cumbria, specialising in English. In addition I have completed a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualification. I have been on a placement to Poland for 3 weeks, which involved teaching English to Polish children and I have also done a module on my University course specifically related to teaching children with English as an Additional Language in the Primary School.

Teaching Experience:

My experience of teaching has mainly been on my teaching placements. On my most recent placement I had the responsibility of teaching the whole class for the majority of the Literacy and Mathematics lessons for the 5 weeks I was there. My experience has been mainly with pupils aged 5-8, however, I do have knowledge of the curriculum for older children as this is an essential part of my course. I have also had training for Catch up literacy, which is a scheme that uses 15 minute sessions to improve the literacy skills of pupils who are struggling. I am currently undertaking an Open College Network Qualification in this. I have also had experience of teaching my 6 year old cousin from a young age.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that my knowledge of teaching and positive approaches towards teaching children are up- to-date because I am gaining new knowledge all the time whilst I am training. I feel that practical activities are extremely important in gaining understanding for both Literacy and Maths and that teaching that involves speaking and listening and other interactive methods, such as games, is very effective and more importantly, children enjoy learning in this way.
