Liz - Milford Haven tutor
Information About Liz:
Personal Description:
I am an enthusiastic teacher who likes to talk to and listen to my family, friends and students. I love reading and theatre, as you might expect from an English teacher! But I also love climbing, walking, sailing and swimming and watching all sorts of sports, especially rugby, american football, gymnastics and athletics.
I have two children who have just left home and I am looking forward to eventually moving to the West coast of Canada where I hope to find lots of interesting places to explore, and lots of interesting people to meet.
Teaching Experience:
I am a qualified teacher who started out in secondary schools teaching English Language, English Literature and P.E. I came from a degree background in language development, but developed a special interest in basic literacy skills when I discovered that my son had learning difficulties. My most recent experience is with adult apprentices (16+), teaching Key Skills, I.T., literacy and numeracy. From 1995 to 2000 I taught English to francophone kids in Quebec, Canada, and from 2000 - 2004 I taught French to American kids in the USA, so I also have a lot of experience with middle school and youger age ranges as well as with adults. I taught ESL students, mainly teens and young adults, this summer.
Tutoring Approach:
My literacy students say I tend to focus especially on report writing and oral presentation, but I think I also like teaching basic stuff like sentence structure and punctuation. I don't find teaching English or French grammar is at all boring, but then my own children think I'm wierd so...
I am really into creating my own materials and I love to include drama in lessons, whether or not it's supposed to be a drama lesson! I believe in putting lessons into context and if I can think of an excuse to get my students up out of their chairs I will. This probably comes from my P.E. background - I used to play and coach both hockey and athletics and I must admit I miss it.
I am a great believer in life-long learning and I encourage my students to examine their own work and set their own goals. This doesn't mean I don't have my own expectations for my students, however. If there are specific standards to be met or tests to be passed, we both have to agree on realistic goals and work towards them. I have been known to tell a student to take things more slowly; on the other hand the words 'Just do it!' have been known to escape my lips....You get the picture.
I am currently working part-time (3 days a week) as an education consultant, so am available days and evenings during the week. Contact me if you have a particular request. Generally speaking I am available to tutor anywhere in Pembrokeshire, but would consider travelling further afield depending upon expenses.
