Suhel - Bradford tutor
Information About Suhel:
Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Suhel.I completed my PGCE primary course in 2008. I am an enthusiastic, self-motivated and dedicated graduate in BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics with Education Studies. I have plenty of initiative and have proven my ability to work on my own and as part of a team. This is demonstrated by my work as a teacher at various schools where I have worked individually and also as part of a team. I am self-confident and have a proven ability to meet targets and achieve successful results. As an effective communicator in four languages: English, Bengali, Urdu, and Arabic, I am able to communicate and interact with people from multicultural backgrounds. My career aspiration is to utilise the skills I have acquired through my studies and different teaching experiences to pursue a career in teaching. I am currently working as a supply teacher working in various Yorkshire primary schools.
I enjoy an active lifestyle of sport in particular football and swimming. Throughout my degree and PGCE, I have continued working part-time. This demonstrates that I am able to take on tasks simultaneously and have managed to handle and balance work, studying and personal life thus showing that I have the stamina for the demanding requisites of a teacher.
Teaching Experience:
I have had a lot of teaching experience. Alongside planning whole class teaching, I have planned work whereby the support staff work with small groups of children and are an active part of the classroom. This helps ensure that work is differentiated according to different abilities in the class and makes assessment of children's learning more individualised. Therefore, a key skill I could offer your school is the experience and ability to co-ordinate various tasks and other staff within the classroom.
My first PGCE placement was in a Year 4 class at Feversham Primary School and my second placement was in key stage 1 class at Byron Primary School. They were both highly diverse schools comprising of children from many minority ethnic backgrounds. They were both extremely successful placements which is reflected in the fact that I received high grades for all the QTS standards. As a teacher at your school, I will bring these high teaching standards, coupled with further experience to your school.
One of my key strengths noted was the ability to engage children, including children who are learning English as an additional language and those with special educational needs through varying my teaching methods. For instance, as part of a literacy lesson, the objective was for children to understand the main events in traditional tales with key emphasis on sequencing events in chronological order. The higher ability children were given the opportunity to produce a PowerPoint presentation of key story events under the headings 'beginning, middle and end' using pictures and text with the help of the support assistant. I worked with some of the lower ability children to re-enact and take photographs of the main events of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' to develop their communication and group collaboration skills. This demonstrates that I was able to make children's learning cross-curricular through using drama and ICT as well as matching the use of ICT to children's abilities.
Another strong point highlighted was my attention to detail and effectiveness at medium and short-term planning and my ability to change lessons depending on how they were progressing. On several occasions I have adapted my lesson after taking advice from my co-operating teacher, therefore demonstrating that I am able to take and act upon advice from senior colleagues. It also shows that I am continually learning and improving as a professional educator; an attribute that I feel will be highly valued in the dynamic environment at your school.
I have had experience of working in various primary education settings. The year before my PGCE, I worked as a key stage 2 class teacher at an independent primary school and during my PGCE placements, I have been working at state run primary schools covering both key stages. From October 2008 onwards I have been working as a supply teacher, this experience has improved my classroom management skills as I have been faced with different classrooms and with different personalities on a daily basis. It has also helped to improve my confidence as a teacher and my ability to adapt. All these diverse experiences and challenges have given me the opportunity to develop a range of skills and knowledge such as: effective behaviour management; motivational strategies; planning, monitoring, evaluating and adapting lessons within the National Curriculum framework and QCA Schemes of Work; using a range of resources and stimulus to cater for the needs of varying interests and abilities of children. Additionally, I have assessed, on a group and individual basis and set success criterion. I have regularly used formative, summative and diagnostic assessments in order to inform my future planning as well as to help children progress.
Education and teaching are areas I am extremely passionate about and I am highly committed to breaking barriers and opening new pathways to learning. I strongly believe that learning should be an enjoyable and stimulating experience but also one that challenges children. My aim is to create a classroom that builds on mutual trust in which each child can positively contribute to their own development through the ability to express their opinions. I believe that we must encourage, motivate and reward children to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and values to participate positively in their community. One way in which I feel this can be achieved is through developing strong, reciprocal relationships with parents and carers by viewing them as partners in their children's education.
Tutoring Approach:
I am passionate and want to impart my skills, knowledge as well as passion to my students. I want to target for full marks, and not just sufficiently high grades, for my students. I am knowledgeable in the subjects I teach and can make difficult concepts into simple terms, making sure that the student can absorb and assimilate the details.
I am an active tutor who takes the initiative to provide notes and questions to my students, and teach in such a way that it helps them to think, comprehend, analyse, and understand concepts and questions. I repeat this process again and again and train the student to grasp concepts, to utilise effectively every tool in their hands (calculators, rulers, etc) and to make full use of exam strategies to reduce their careless mistakes or take advantage of the structure in which questions are set.
I believe motivational skills are the most important factor to be present in a good tutor and I have it. I am to be able to build good rapport with my students and create the hunger, the want, the confidence to score in them. Many a times, I have come across students who are desperate, dejected and totally low in confidence. They seeked tuition from me as a last resort, as if I'm a miracle pill to at least help them pass a subject. And luckily for them, I managed to instill more confidence in everyone of them, give them hope, and finally, they achieve a grade that is way better than a pass.
A good tutor will take responsibility for all their students. For me being responsible as a tutor means
i) willing and want to take the student all the way to the end of the year
ii) do not teach the wrong things. When unsure, state so, and do extensive research before teaching the student the correct things. It is a hideous sin to make the student unlearn wrong things.
iii) ensure that the student improve in grades
