Information About Michael:

Personal Description:

I am a tutor of German, French, and Latin because of my first degree, in Classics, and because of my Austrian family connection and the many summers spent in Austria; and because of the advantages I had also with French at school, in that three of my four teachers were Fr nationals. I have worked in Austria(Burgenland, Steiermark, and Vienna) and have translated from these two languages for book and periodical publishers. As well as this I have sung these modern languages and Italian professionally, and having siblings there, I visit the countries at least once annually.

Teaching Experience:

Secondary exper in two schools, in Latin, and Latin and Greek teaching.
Sixth form and Further Ed teaching.
Vacation secondary teaching in Austria over eight years.
Tuition since my own student days.

Tutoring Approach:

Somewhat Socratic in that I expect the pupil to make the maximum use of what he does know, and then add to that.
I believe in going from the known to the unknown. By using "word families" etc I help the pupil to snowball on further vocabulary and usages to his existing store. I emphasise that the pupil must learn to rely on memory. Mine is a pupil-focussed approach.
I think the pupil must understand the nuts and bolts of languages- the mechanics and dynamics, ie must grasp grammar and syntax as far as possible for his age etc.
