Gabriel - Brighton tutor

Information About Gabriel:

Personal Description:

I am 22 years old, and I have lived in Brighton for the past 4 years. I come from a very mixed background and as a child and young adult I moved frequently. I have been lucky to enjoy a fair amount of travelling, mostly in Europe and South America. Spanish and French are the languages I was raised in, but I am as well fluent in English. I have finished a degree in Ecology and Conservation, and now I am studying permaculture. I have always been fascinated by science and as a child I would love to learn about Chemistry, Biology and Maths. I really enjoy working with children, I have got 4 nieces and 2 nephews (with ages ranging from 1 to 11) and take care of them all from time to time.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English and Spanish in Guatemala and El Salvador to villagers who had never been taught to read and write before. I did this every weekend for 2 years before graduating from school and it was the most gratifying experience as one opens a whole new set of windows towards the world for these people. When someone who hasn't read their whole life picks up a page and reads a few words their face always gives out a big honest smile. I also have experience tutoring the young ones in school mainly in the scientific areas and have realized that many students in difficulties are only lacking a few steps in order to understand the mechanism of let's say the carbon cycle, or a factorisation etc...
I have also gained experience working with children in more of a active way. I have coached a Basket-Ball team of under 11's and as a baby-sitter including homework help.
I do not have extensive experience but I have always taken pleasure from helping others.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is quite modern. In languages, I believe it is necessary to solely speak in the language being taught. Even if the student does not understand at first, I believe their are ways of explaining in that same language in order for the student to really understand the word and not only associate it to its equivalent in English. I believe in total cultural immersion of the student also helps when trying to learn a language, in other words, I will try not to bore the student by showing him the culture, the food, the sites for example of the french, or the South American, to motivate him or her to learn these languages and then maybe experience these cultures on their own.
In Sciences, which I love, I will attract the student's attention by showing him funny and astonishing examples that I believe are easier to remember than the boring text book examples.
I believe Scientific reasoning to work in mechanisms and it will be my duty to try to get the student to understand how these mechanisms work. I will not try to write facts on a white board and expect the student to memories them. I will give the students the tools so he can draw at the end of the lesson the whole water cycle perfectly. I beleive that by showing the student that HE or SHE can manage the problem on their own boosts their morale and therefore empowers them to get over the fear of maths or biology for example...
