Ruhana - Luton tutor
Information About Ruhana:
Personal Description:
I am young and enthusiastic (only 22) and believe that learning should be an enjoyable experience. I am committed to investing time and energy into my tutees to ensure that they retain the maximum knowledge through their personal learning style.
I grew up in Luton and went through the state education system and understand first hand the pressures of studying and the impact the right environment can have on learning. After attending a school that was in special measures I am fully aware of the importance and necessity of sometimes having to teach yourself the curriculum and motivating yourself to learn. (This can be an absolute bore without the right encouragement!).
I use my own example as a success story having received good A grades at GCSE (Lea Manor High School) and at A-level (Luton Sixth Form College) I then went onto to graduate with a BSc (Hons)in Social Policy, Criminal Justice and Psychology from the London School Of Economics and Political Sciences. After being given the opportunity to study at the world famous institution I feel it is important for others to have the same aspirations and I think tutoring is a way that I can give back what I have learnt and help others develop their own skills, passions and dreams.
As an ethnic minority it also important for me to be able to value and respect diversity as it really is the spice of life. I can speak Bengali fluently and I am also studying Arabic so we might be able to have conversations in either language or your own language during the breaks. :-)
Learning should be fun, and having a good sense of humour is really important. I am easy to get on with and my lessons should leave you smiling but this doesn't mean I won't challenge you or push you to fulfil your potential.
Teaching Experience:
I have a lot of different teaching experience.
In 2005, I spent a year working as a millennium volunteer tutoring in an after school homework club in the Baytree Centre in Brixton. My role involved helping young girls from the ages of 8 up to 16 with various pieces of schoolwork and homework.
Building on from this, in spring 2006 I was also employed by George Green Secondary School in the Docklands as a bi-lingual English Teacher. I undertook this classroom role as part of an innovative project to see if a set of fifteen GCSE students could learn the GCSE AQA English Anthology better if taught in their mother tongue - Bengali. The scheme enabled me to have full independence for lesson plans and what aspects of the curriculum was taught and the scheme was a success.
I also have some unconventional teaching experience, I have worked as a television presenter on a children's educational programme which is faith based. This has enabled me to strengthen my communication skills and teach a large number of young people through the medium of television.
Currently I have also been tutoring a set of different students in GCSE English and Science, so I am quite familiar with the curriculum. I studied a very politically orientated degree and my job as a campaigner has enabled me to teach citizenship classes as part of an active community curriculum.
Tutoring Approach:
I favour a hands on pro-active approach to tutoring subjects with plenty of examples and memorable explanations and stories that will stick. The induction would involve finding out what learning style works best for the student and then I am creative and flexible enough to work with that. It is important that lessons have a good structure and that students feel that they are able to tangibly identify what they have learnt and how they have benefited after each lesson. At the same time I can jump straight in and start teaching a topic that is unclear without too much hassle, which would also make me perfect if you just wanted a few lessons to explain a concept you did not understand.
