Hannah - Cardiff tutor

Information About Hannah:

Personal Description:

Having always loved books, reading, and performing, I graduated in 2005 with a 2:1 degree in English Literature from the University of Hull (the first year of which was joint English and Drama). Having travelled around the world and been a teaching assistant in the UK for over a year, I thoroughly enjoy tutoring. Other interests involve arts and crafts, gardening, baking, knitting, tea and chocolate biscuits.

Teaching Experience:

As well as voluntary teaching in Belize and Sri Lanka, I recently returned from South Korea, where I lived for a year whilst teaching English as a foreign language to children from ages 2 to 15. I also tutored both adults and children on a one on one basis.
I also coordinated the Hay Literary Festival children's tent in 2009 and 2010 with a friend, and have been asked to return this year to organise it single handedly - no mean feat! Lots of arts and crafts based around a different theme or book each day - making a wishing line, a collage wall and minibeasts out of recycling for our Very Hungry Caterpillar day is amazing fun!

Tutoring Approach:

It is difficult to learn if you do not feel comfortable expressing your ideas and opinions, or are bored by the subject matter. I aim to encourage tutees to gain confidence both in the texts they study and in their own ideas, be it an English poem or a monologue they must perform, in a warm and friendly environment with plenty of discussion and at a pace suited to them.
My time spent around people in a learning environment has taught me that a sense of humour is vital in teaching, whilst still maintaining a sense of structure so important to a learning environment. For younger children, this is coupled with learning through creative means, craft, art and games, though how big an input this has can be adapted to the child and parents' individual needs.

I suggest an initial meeting between myself and a potential tutee (and any parents if relevant) prior to any actual teaching to discuss the anticipated outcome of tutoring sessions and to get a clear idea of what we expect from one another. This ensures that targets are set early on, giving the tutee realistic goals to work towards, and also that everyone involved is happy both with these targets and also with each other!
It is up to the individual whether or not they want to be given work in between sessions - whilst I do expect input, enthusiasm and commitment during tutorials, I am by no means a slave driver!
