Jerome - York tutor

Information About Jerome:

Personal Description:

I am 31 and have wide experience of learning and teaching in many different situations. I ama writer, artist and musician, and have wide experience in communicating with many different people and study of many subjects.
Upon gaining 10 GCSEs (including an A in English Literature and Art and A* in English Language) I studied Media and later on took an Access to Humanities course. After a break from studying in which I lived and worked in various places I then undertook a course in intensive esoteric education in the Beshara School in Scotland. I feel this developed me greatly as a person, leading to a depth of knowledge and maturity as well as an ability to interpret and understand complex texts, especially of a religious nature.
This ability was further developed on the degree course which I subsequently undertook at Dartington College of Arts. This was basically concerned with modern art and text and included a development of my own ongoing artistic practise and study of (especially postmodern) literature, poetry, media, and various types of performance of texts.
Following this I took a four week intensive course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at Torbay Language Centre, Devon, and have since then been largely working as a TEFL teacher/tutor for the last five years.

Teaching Experience:

Beginning with one to one lessons to some students in Totnes, Devon, where I lived whilst studying at university and taking the CELTA course, I went on to teach at the school where I took the course over the summer, teaching mainly European teenagers. I then went to live in Japan for a year. There I taught English at many different levels, from toddlers to fluent adults with whom I gave one to one lessons.
After some traveling in South East Asia I returned to Japan to live with my future wife and continued to give a variety of lessons, privately and in various schools. I then returned to the UK where I taught at a summer school again over the summer, once more teaching mainly European teenagers. After this I traveled to Australia and New Zealand, doing a variety of voluntary work and teaching English at language centres in Byron Bay and Melbourne in Australia to young adults from all over the world. Since then I have returned to the UK (via Japan again where I got married!) and worked in various situations, whilst continuing to develop my artistic and writing practise.

Tutoring Approach:

I am keen to teach various different subjects for a change and feel I have a lot of experience and knowledge that may be of help. However I feel education should not be about one person (the teacher) giving his or her knowledge to the student but rather about helping them to learn. Learning should thus be enjoyable and interesting. I will always try to adapt my teaching style to individuals requirements, and find out what suits them best, in terms of learning/teaching style and/or subject matter. I am very flexible in this way and aim to be of service however I can.
