Catherine - Middlesbrough tutor
Information About Catherine:
Personal Description:
I graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in the summer of 2002 with a Honours Degree in English and History. Soon after this I decided that I would like to work abroad and completed my Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. While completing this qualification I began working as an in class learning support tutor and enjoyed this so much that when the position of Dyslexia Support Tutor came up at Middlesbrough College I jumped at the chance! Through this position I have been privileged enough to be able to sit my Post Graduate Certificate in Education, making me a qualified teacher, and a Level five OCR qualification in Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties. Though my specialist area is Dyslexia I am very interested in all specific learning difficulties and I am currently studying towards a diploma in Psychology at the University of Teesside, which is the first step towards becoming an Educational Psychologist which I would really like to do.
Teaching Experience:
I am a currently working as a Dyslexia Support Tutor at Middlesbrough College where I teach learners from the age of 14 and upwards. Until recently I was carrying out this role on a part time basis and at the same time teaching ESOL to entry level learners of all ages and working as a Dyslexia Support Tutor at Teesside University as well. I have worked at summer schools in the past which have involved me teaching English to children of ages 4 and up both here in the UK and in their native country. Before I took up the role of Dyslexia Support Tutor at Middlesbrough College I worked as an in class Additional Learning Support Tutor and enjoyed this so much that I still like to work in small classes offering support alongside my main position. I am a member of the institute for learning and often deliver lessons to other tutors about specific learning difficulties and the strategies which can be used in class to assist learners.
Tutoring Approach:
I tutor to the individual learner and everyone is different... therefore I like to work with the learner to draw up a plan of the things they want to work on. Learning should always be enjoyable so environment, resources and teaching should be used to achieve this. Learners with specific learning difficulties simply learn differently to others and I believe that all avenues of teaching should be explored with each individual learner to discover how they can enjoy learning.
