Personal Description:

Hello,

My name is Anna and I have taught English for Academic Purposes both in the UK and in Japan. Before beginning my teaching career, I gained a doctorate in English Literature at The University of York. One of my hobbies is reading good literature and I believe that reading is a great way to improve language skills. As well as reading, I like being outdoors and taking photographs. As well as living in Japan, I lived in Canada for 9 years and Indonesia for 3 years when I was young. I enjoy meeting people and have certainly found that travel is a great way to make new friends. I have taught many students from a very wide variety of backgrounds and through my experiences, I have developed the skill to provide interesting and enjoyable lessons.

Teaching Experience:

For the last 4 and half years, I taught at Lakeland College, Japan, based in central Tokyo. I taught academic reading, writing, listening and speaking. I also taught an undergraduate writing course where my students were required to write a 10 page research paper on a subject of their choice. In addition, I have extensive experience of one-to-one tuition both in Japan and England. These classes included conversation, business English and also lessons based on grammar textbooks.

Tutoring Approach:

One of my strongest skills as a teacher is being able to make students feel comfortable in lessons. My approach is friendly and student-centered (that is, I expect my students to do the work required!) and this results in my students becoming much more confident in their abilities. Whether on an individual basis or in a classroom, I am able to develop good relationships with my students and through this, I have the pleasure of seeing their skills improve.

• MA - The University of York - 19th Century English Literature
• BA (Hons) - The University of York - English Literature - 1st class degree
