Information About Jo:

Personal Description:

I believe that learning a language can enrich your life and should be done in a fun and interesting way. My parents encouraged me to travel from a young age and I suppose I developed an 'ear' for languages through being made to ask for ice-creams and make friends with local kids! I also learned French and German at school and then went on an intensive course in Florence to learn Italian - then went on to study both German and Italian at the University of Reading. I live in Chelmsford with my husband.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching German and Italian up to A level standard in comprehensive schools and as a private tutor. I have also used German working in the private sector as a media analyst.

Tutoring Approach:

My current job is 'specialist teacher for children with physical and neurological impairments', a job I love but I am missing my languages! Being able to tutor someone else would therefore also be an enjoyable experience for me. I hope that all my experiences in life and as a teacher have made me a patient and empathetic person who can work with a range of different people from any background and of any age. I can be guided by what a client is hoping to achieve but would hope to employ a range of styles, keeping a balance between the formal and informal. My favourite analogy is that learning a language is like building a house - the desire to learn is the foundation, the words are the bricks and the grammar is the cement that holds them all together in the right place! I have a current CRB certificate.
