Shaun - Brighton tutor
Information About Shaun:
Personal Description:
The first point I would like to share is that I am passionate about the medium of photography. Since leaving college in 1983 I count myself very fortunate to have been continually employed in this industry. A career that has resulted with me meeting and working with very interesting people and travelling all over the world. Throughout my time as a commercial/PR/Editorial Photographer I have made it a top priority to keep my personal portfolio 'alive', continually developing it's look and feel and in doing so carving out a very individualistic style. By way of exhibiting whenever/wherever possible I see it as a great compliment that my work has been taken abroad by clients to places such as Milan, Paris, New York and Barcelona. Further information is included below but least to say I extremely enjoy sharing my knowledge and, if I happen to encourage, enlighten and/or inspire somebody, I see that as a win, win situation...
Teaching Experience:
I have taught evening classes and worked three years as Photographic Officer within a University. Some of my duties included demonstrating darkroom processing and printing methods, with over 10 years experience with Adobe Photoshop I was also responsible for guiding students through digital scanning, retouching and manipulation techniques. As stated below I also gained my City & Guilds 7302 teaching certificate.
Tutoring Approach:
I find that my intuitive teaching style has developed from two main foundations. A natural desire to teach and the personal reward I receive from witnessing somebody progress through the subject, having recognised a personal interest in a given area and the desire to tackle the learning experience. I'm also very aware that teaching is a two way interaction, with this in mind it is very important to monitor the student's understanding at key stages by way of question and answer/feedback opportunities through the lesson.
I fully realise that no matter how well organised and imaginative a lesson is planned there are difficult and challenging aspects to the learning environment. I attempt to make the experience as enjoyable and stimulating as possible and, when hurdles arise, address these in an empathetic way with alternative strategies to address them.
I take a ground up approach, begin with the basics and assume nothing. Necessary for the young of course, however mature students may have built their knowledge on pieces of information ( with varying degrees of accuracy) and/or leap frogged certain areas completely. So, without wanting to seem patronising, I take things slowly to begin with but focus on the main sections of the subject. Parallel topics will be touched on, such as the history of photography, but these are always taken in context rather than dwelt on.
Learning can and should be fun, fulfilling and rewarding. I aim to take the tutees to their highest possible level and through this discover more about the subject and themselves.
