Herve - Edinburgh tutor

Information About Herve:

Personal Description:

I am a French citizen and was raised in France. I have a French Baccalaureate (Baccalaurat A1 French and Mathematics). I achieved highly in the International option of the Baccalaurat, which involved an exam in English Literature and History/Geography set by the Cambridge Board of Examinations. I studied German to A- level which I used to teach German at a basic level during my PGCE.
Following my Baccalaurat in France I moved to England to study politics at Newcastle University, in what is my second language.
In 2004, after working as a teaching language assistant, I completed a PGCE in MFL which expanded and strengthened my working knowledge of French as a foreign language. The PGCE course provided me with a good grounding in pedagogical methods and working knowledge of language learning, qualifying me to work in England as an MFL teacher.

Teaching Experience:

Following my PGCE I taught in a very challenging secondary school in Hartlepool as a French supply teacher for 9 months. During this time I passed an Ofsted inspection and, as a member of staff contributed to the school being taken out of special measures. My practical experience as a French Teacher further consolidated my language teaching skills. I completed two terms of my NQT year and went on to do supply teaching throughout the North East.
I have also taught adults at the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Sunderland University in Newcastle where I tailored my teaching materials and methods for adult learning and emphasised the cultural aspect of teaching languages. This was well received by my students and was a very rewarding professional experience. This has helped further my understanding of the workings of language acquisition, and the motivations for learning languages. I believe this varied practical experience is an asset which is not easily given an academic equivalence!

Tutoring Approach:

I am currently giving French lessons to adults on a freelance basis, and working as a translator and interpreter. I remain constantly in touch with my cultural roots in France, as my family still live there and I return for regular visits. As a teacher, this gives me a unique perspective on French life, access to a range of materials and an authenticity which I have found pupils to be receptive to. As a French native speaker, I provide a bridge between language learning and real life experience which I think is an important part of the provision for languages. I believe that making foreign languages a living subject, spoken and lived by millions of people, provides an important motivational factor for students.
I have strong experience of teaching in a range of educational settings and have an extremely rounded skill set. I have taught a range of subjects and have developed a diverse portfolio of resources for use in the classroom. I am accomplished at producing creative learning programmes, activities, work sheets and games.
I have strong communication skills, which have been the bedrock of my career to date. In my work as a teacher I have constantly demonstrated good interpersonal and communication skills. I have the ability to motivate through enthusiasm, and a good understanding of client's needs is central to my approach! I am dynamic and enthusiastic in my teaching, and feel most at home bringing new subjects to others. Feedback from my adult education classes has always been positive about my teaching style, and my supervisors have always been pleased with my work and my team spirit.
