Laura - Brighton tutor

Information About Laura:

Personal Description:

I am a 24-year-old female living in the centre of Brighton. I teach practical music and music theory from my flat, specialising in Guitar. I qualified with distinction in an HND in Modern Music (Guitar) in 2006, after studying at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music.
My hourly tuition rate is 25, but I am happy to give a free lesson with block bookings (more than ten lessons).
I own a spare electric guitar (Fender Stratocaster) for students to use who either do not want to bring their own instrument to lessons, or else do not have their own.
I also have clear Enhanced Disclosure from the CRB.

Teaching Experience:

I have teaching experience in secondary schools, but I prefer to tutor privately because the one-to-one element of this way of teaching enables me to offer the student a personalised service that is tailored to best suit his or her needs.
I have taught a variety of levels, ranging from children as young as seven and complete beginners, up to adults and quite experienced players. Some students wanted to learn just practical (how to play), some students wanted to incorporate theory and sight-reading into learning to play. I have not yet tutored anyone who wanted to be taught a specific syllabus (Grades or curriculum etc.) but I would be happy to consider this if it was desired.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is simple: if you want to learn an instrument, you will. My only proviso for taking students on is that they are passionate about and committed to learning. I will make an initial assessment of what ability level a student is at, but I operate a 'back to basics' approach with respect to technique and practice routines. I believe that you cannot unlock all of your potential as a musician unless the foundations of your playing are solid, therefore I focus closely on correcting bad habits and encouraging the student to re-learn tachniques and skills that are employed inefficiantly or incorrectly.
As a tutor, I am patient and creative, I think that music is joyful and it should be as fun to learn as it is to create. With very young students, I often use colour diagrams, and get the child to interreact with these as part of the lesson. Hands-on learning is more effective, in my opinion, than just bombarding a student with information, and I like my lessons to be fun as well focused.
