Information About Thomas:

Personal Description:

I grew up in a bi-lingual household (German & English) in Luxembourg, where I went to the European School. Even though I was in the German section, I learned English from first year primary onwards and am equally comfortable at expressing myself in both of these languages, both orally and in the written form. Halfway through my secondary education, I was also taught core subjects such as Economics, Geography, and Sociology in English, which influenced my decision to continue my education in Dorset, England. Additionally, I learned French during secondary school in Luxembourg (I went on to achieve an A grade for my A-levels in Dorset, UK), I picked up Luxembourgish in everyday life up to fluent level, and I learned Spanish during a 2-month stay in Havanna, Cuba, in 2003. I also studied Business & Economics at A-level, I am an enthusiastic drummer (I've played the drum kit and Congas in various bands and drum groups, performing in front of crowds of up to 500 people), am a keen sportsman (I played Rugby at Junior National level, Taekwondo at University, and enjoy Cycling, Running, Tennis, etc. I am also a film enthusiast, enjoy attending musical performances, volunteering / fundraising for charity, and take great interest in my local environment and community.

Teaching Experience:

I briefly taught a primary class in Ghana (English and Maths), but other than that I have no formal teaching experience. I have, however, been involved in many translation and interpreting projects (at university and professionally) of which I would be glad to offer you a sample. I have received many years of high quality Primary, Secondary, and University education and am certainly able to teach what I have learned, as I still have all the teaching material. I am a very good communicator, enjoy explaining issues and discussions, and many of my friends have recommended me becoming a teacher. I am considering accepting the PGCE in Teaching Modern Foreign Languages (French & German) at Bristol University for which I have been offered a place.

Tutoring Approach:

First of all I will assess the individual skill level through a thorough a process of conversation and evaluation. Then I will ask the student where he/she sees his/her weaknesses/strengths. I will then begin teaching, while taking into account these areas, with the aim to improve the weak points. I believe that teaching needs to strike a fine balance between discipline and fun, as enjoyment in learning the material is vital for motivation. I also think that a continuous stream of feedback between tutor (me) and the tutee is essential to ensure progress. I am willing to teach any of my listed subject areas, as long as I am notified at least one week in advance. Should the tutee have no specific areas of interest, I shall prepare a standard teaching schedule.
