Ruben - Leeds tutor

Information About Ruben:

Personal Description:

My name is Ruben, I was born in Italy. I am son of an Italian father and a French mother; being born and raised in Como, my hometown, was a pleasure. But, at age 13 my parents decided to leave Europe to go live in Bali, Indonesia. I spent most of my adolescence on the island of Bali before living independently throughout my last two years of high school in Guam, U.S.A. I have been successful in my efforts to achieve the International Baccalaureate Diploma, achieving an overall score of 38. My subjects included Spanish, History, English and Biology at higher level whilst economics, maths and philosophy were my standard levels. I have previously tutored children ranging from 12 to 18 years of age. I am a demanding tutor, yet fun and outgoing.

Teaching Experience:

02/06 - Present
Fundraised for, conceived and managed a cultural centre for underprivileged children aimed at Information Technology education as well as cultural diversity and based on the principles of non-violence, peace and tolerance. The cultural centre, still successful and active to this day, was also aimed at creating a place for children to express their creativity through learned computer skills.

08/06-05/08
Privately tutored a student from St. John's School (Guam) at a Beginner High School level over two years. The boy had no previous knowledge of French and took the IB Ab-Initio course in order to fulfill the diploma's requirement. Chris, the student, succeeded in his exams and tells me he intends to study french further.

08/06-05/08
Privately tutored a student from Notre Dame Academy (Guam) at an intermediate High School level over two years. Sidney had lived in Italy for the past two years of her life. She was willing to continue her studies of the Italian Language and improve both her oral and writing proficiency. She succeeded in doing both and achieving relatively high standards of learning.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach whilst tutoring is very practical and outgoing. I like to keep a communication notebook in which the student is asked to write a weekly contribution in the specific language taught. This not only enables the student to get a "feel" of the language (which, in my opinion, is enhanced by handwriting), but it also allows both the tutor and the student to witness the concrete improvements and weak points of a person's proficiency. however practical, I believe that languages need to be studies intensely, passionately and constantly. I thus am reasonably demanding in terms of homework and I am capable of making adjustments in times where the student might be overloaded or overstressed by normal school work.
In subjects other than languages I am usually as demanding but not as structured. Subjects such as History and Economics leave room for discussion and development of various individual of global theories. Dates are only indicators, the events that happen can be interpreted in multiple ways, and i tend to keep that as a resource whilst tutoring.
