Information About Elanor:

Personal Description:

I am a Canadian and British citizen and have been living in the UK for 2.5 years. I graduated Secondary School in Ottawa, Canada with my Bilingual Certificate after participating in the French Immersion program, studying French for 12 years. After Secondary School, I took a GAP year and spent 6 months volunteering at an orphanage in Guatemala, where I built upon my previous 3 years of study in Spanish. I completed my undergraduate degree and hold a 1:1 from the University of Western Ontario, where I studied political science, international development and Spanish. During university, I participated in an exchange program and studied for my third year in Ecuador, South America where I immersed myself in the culture, perfecting my Spanish language skills. I recently completed my Masters Degree in Public Policy in Latin America at the University of Oxford where I also worked on translation.

Teaching Experience:

I have three and a half years experience tutoring / teaching French in Canada and the UK. For one year, I tutored French at the primary level to two students in Canada. As well, I have three months experience as a teacher's aid, where I volunteered to assist a core French teacher, helping in various classes, ages ranging between 8 and 14.
In both Guatemala and Ecuador, I tutored students in English teaching them the basic grammatical structure of the language as well as verb conjugation and vocabulary. I believe my experience working with Spanish speaking students helped me develop the skills necessary to structure lessons not only in English, but in Spanish as well. I used these skills when I tutored spanish at the GCSE level in Liverpool last year, particularly for exam preparation, as well in Oxford this year. I also have experience in translation after spending 3 weeks as the translator for a student trip to Honduras organized by my undergraduate university.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a structured approach to tutoring. I believe strongly in the student understanding the grammatical structure of the language first. Therefore, I usually begin with a review to better understand what level the student is at. I initially focus on sentence structure, outlining each component and its use. I then proceed to verb groupings and conjugation, beginning with the present tense and progressing to the past, imperfect, and future when the student is ready. I allot a theme to each lesson so that the lesson itself is structured around one idea. For example a lesson may focus on sports, food, family, or holidays. This way all the verbs and vocabulary learned revolve around a theme and makes the lesson more fun and interesting. I also assign interactive activities to ensure the student's oral skills are strengthened. Activities differ depending on the age and level of the student; however, examples include writing stories, songs, rhymes, a make-believe trip to the store or supermarket, as well as reading novels or short passages. Throughout, I try and ensure the student is speaking as much as possible as oral exams tend to be the area of most concern for past students.
