Information About Karen:

Personal Description:

I am a fully qualified Modern Foreign Languages, EFL and ESOL teacher. I have lived and worked in Germany (for four years in Munich and Augsburg doing aupairing, shop and office work), in Spain (teaching English for four years in Barcelona, Feuerteventura and Sevilla), and England (doing administrative work and teaching, the latter for over 15 years).

I enjoy meeting people of other nationalities and exchanging ideas about different cultures and experiences. In my free time I enjoy taking part in conversation groups in Spanish, German and English, the latter with people of a variety of cultural backgrounds. I also enjoy watching European films and TV programmes both in the languages I know and in ones that I do not. In my quiet time I enjoy reading novels both in English and in Spanish and German. In the future I would like to learn Italian!

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as an EFL teacher since 1994 - teaching both abroad and in England to multi-lingual and monolingual classes. In Spain I taught children from 5 years old and businessmen in company, while in England I have taught children from 12 years old at residential summer schools and adults from 17 to 75 years of age in term time. I have also had some experience in teaching both German and Spanish at secondary schools.

I taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at an FE college in Nottingham for fifteen years. I taught general EFL classes in grammar, vocabulary and the four language skills. I also taught Study Skills, Academic English (EAP) and prepared students for IELTS examinations. I am also experienced in preparing ESOL students for exams from Entry 1 to Level 1 and CAE. In addition, I have taught EAP (Academic English) to pre-sessional students at university.

I am currently teaching German at evening classes to adults and Spanish to a family class on a Saturday. I am also teaching ESOL to adult learners on week days.

I have given private tuition to adults and children in Spanish, German and EFL. I have also assisted school children with their reading and writing, and in preparing for the SATs exam.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in student centred, active, task based learning. I am happy to teach one -one classes or couples/small groups (each additional student will be charged a rate of 50% of the hourly rate)

I am happy to teach in my home or travel to the clients house (for which there would be an additional charge to cover travel costs).
