Gareth - Leeds tutor

Information About Gareth:

Personal Description:

My name is Gareth Lewis and I am a twenty-one year old student at Leeds University. I am studying for a Joint Honours Degree in English and Philosophy and will complete my course in July 2008. I have enjoyed and excelled at English throughout my life, and by combining genuine enthusiasm to learn with careful attention to the various requirements of examinations at different levels, I have never failed to achieve the highest grades available. Living in London, I am only available (in Leeds) during term time university dates. Since these roughly coincide with school holidays I am hoping this will not be a problem. I believe I bring a youthful enthusiasm to the subject, and am familiar with the layout and requirements of English examinations at all levels up to A-Level. I am of course well read and practiced at many if not all of the set texts for all of these examinations on all examination boards, but familiarising myself with a new work or play would not be a problem for me.

Teaching Experience:

From September to May 2004-2005 I taught at University College School in North London. I taught children from years three to six. My formal teaching experience is limited to this particular stretch, but I believe that a tutor and tutee environment is very different to that of a school classroom. I would look forward to, and enjoy, sharing ideas and discussing literature with an enthusiastic tutee. For a less enthusiastic student, I am convinced that my own enthusiasm for the subject would be sufficient to persuade him or her that the world of english litereature is an exciting place.

Tutoring Approach:

I think that English is a subject which requires, more than anything else, relaxed discussion. In this way, ideas can best spring to and from one another. I think that note taking is important - there are always going to be some things which simply need to be learnt - but i think it is also important to help cultivate a mind which is able to move fluidly. This is especially important in exams, as examiners know when information is merely being regurgitated, and this will not be enough to achieve a top grade (particularly at AS and A-Level). To achieve a top grade, an awareness of critical interpretation is very important. I will introduce students to various critical responses to texts and ask them to see whether they agree and to formulate their own responses in the process.
