Sheelagh - Peacehaven tutor

Information About Sheelagh:

Personal Description:

I am a middle aged lady who is good at encouraging unconfident learners because I am kind. I am very enthusiastic about the English language, culture and literature and I try to impart this enthusiasm to my students. I try to incorporate practical activities into my lessons if possible. For example, when I was teaching my students to use the imperative form for instructions, I made a trifle with them, kept it in the fridge overnight, asked them to decorate it the next day and then we shared it with another class.

Teaching Experience:

Mixed secondary school - one year teaching English to 11-16 year olds

Comprehensive school - five years teaching Business Studies and Shorthand to 14-18 year olds.

I taught Shorthhand at evening classes to adults for one year.

I taught ESOL to asylum seekers, refugees and foreign students for nearly ten years in an agency and I have been teaching at home since 2012.

Tutoring Approach:

Friendly and positive. I try to make it enjoyable and relevant and to choose topics that interest individual students whenever possible. I use games, puzzles, songs and authentic material which I adapt as well as the standard textbooks. I learn a lot from the students and I am constantly revising my ideas, methods and approach as a result of this.
