Personal Description:
My name is Duncan. I completed a Physics/Maths Degree in 1995 before researching for a PhD which I completed in 1999. I then worked for a government research laboratory and then a top-rated university research department. I have since moved into teaching as I find it more rewarding than research.

Teaching Experience:

I am a self-employed Maths Tutor and it is my main income. For this reason I am continually developing new resources for my students and continually developing my coaching skills. I am not a classroom teacher... instead I am a specialist one-to-one coach which requires very different skills.

I have a number of regular slots for long-term students (most of which are usually taken at any one time) and some capacity for one-off sessions (or a short series of sessions). I run a special "Exam Diary" from April through to June with extra sessions available for people looking for help in the lead-up to the summer exams. My actual availability varies... please contact to find out more!

I have experience of tutoring for A-level, GCSE Higher, GCSE Foundation and 11+/13+ for Maths (including C1-4, M1, S1, etc.).

In Summer 2012 one student surprised their class by getting a good grade at C1 (unlike the rest of the class) because the teacher had not prepared them for unusual questions (but I had prepared my student)... another student was raised from a U to a C at AS Level... and another student has gone up two sets at school within less than 12 months... one student got an A* and made it to Cambridge... and another student made it to Canford with a special recommendation in their acceptance letter for their maths. I cannot guarantee this level of success but believe I offer a "unique, unfair advantage".

I am also happy to offer support for all science subjects up to GCSE level (and I can also offer Physics A-Level support to my regular students).

Limited help is available to university students. However, generally this is difficult because subjects become so varied at this level that it can be difficult for me to know exactly what your course is looking for.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is three-fold...

First I aim to work on basic skills... these are the foundation of success in Mathematics. If you know how to do a really complicated question in A-Level Maths you can lose most of the points if you accidently do not rearrange the equation correctly at the start. This is really true.

Secondly I aim to work on topic-specific skills. I have customised worksheets (written by me) that include fake exam questions for most topics. For example, for C1, C2, C3 and C4 exams I have a set of questions for every topic that are not the same as previous questions in past papers... this is a significant advantage for my students as I have tried to anticipate likely questions that may come up that the examiners have not set in previous years.

Thirdly I will coach the individual student to better use their natural ability. This may mean boosting their confidence... it often (bizarrely) means lowering their confidence in their first answer (but increasing their understanding of how real mathematicians work) so they better double-check their answers as they go through and lose less marks in the exam. It may also mean developing memory tricks for key facts, approaches to understanding questions and some really nifty tricks for how to spot what the examiner is after.

I take the pupil through a carefully formulated learning program which is compiled from a detailed assessment of their tuition requirements; this is always discussed with the parent/guardian before the program commences, to ensure that they are happy with the arrangements. I am a very friendly and relaxed individual and I like to convey these feelings during my tutoring sessions and always try to make the pupil feel comfortable with the whole learning process and ensure I work at their pace at all times.

Tutoring Approach:

For the mathematics and physics teaching, I believe the conceptional understanding is much more important than memorize the method. Once the concept has been absorbed, the method of solving problem become rather trivial. Of course to maximize the efficiency of learning, an interests in the subject is essential. Hence I'd like to increase the students engagement by given information on more practical use of the knowledge or more news on advanced study.

Note: for people asking for university level maths. I will ask lecture notes or at least syllabus. Though undergraduate maths is taught at similar level, there are variation for each modules due to each lecturers' style. Just list a module name hardly tells what topics are required to study. Lecture notes are used to see the way that particular lecture taught, otherwise give me a syllabus I shall use my own lecture notes.

when teaching children on a one to one basis, I usually start by giving them a general assessment on their reading and problem solving skills. After this I am able to plan for each child on an individual basis on how to help them improve their levels and fill gaps in their learning. Due to the large number of students that i help i am not able to travel to children any longer so children come to my home for tuition but only in special circumstances do i travel to a child's home on Sundays . I normally teach the children for an hour and then give them homework for further skill practice. I also help children and parents draw up a reading and learning timetable which is very easy to follow, this has proven to be very effective in the past, in helping children become independent learners. My approach is to be friendly but professional and help children relax in order to enjoy learning.

I am teacher who has taken early retirement. I have 15 years experience of teaching at infant level and further education level.
I taught reception classes for two years followed by year one for two years in Leicester.
I have also taught students with learning difficulties independant living skills for 9 years.
I have been working in schools in and around the Pontypridd untill I left 18 months ago to live in Glasgow.
Whilst in Glasgow I taught one 5 year old boy for a period of about 8 weeks over the smmer holiday. I also taught two 10 year old boys who needed their confidence boosting.
I am now back in Pontypridd and available to tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that tutoring should be fun for both the child and the tutor. I would look to use games as much as possible to enrich the time with your child. Initially I would need to talk to you as the parent to see what problems you and possibly the class teacher believe your child has, and how best they can be helped. I would need to review the situation as time went on to see what I have gathered.

SAXOPHONE-I am an experienced saxophonist. Currently I play both alto and baritone saxophone. I have taught young pupils at my old school before for free, but now that i have gained enough experience, not just as a teacher but at a very high level in bands too, I am starting to tutor. I teach many different styles, have it be jazz, pop or classical. I offer tuition for students of all ages. MATHS- I am a higher level maths student and i have an A grade at GCSE level maths. Maths has always been a great ability of mine and I mainly teach it because I have a love for it and in my experience those who i have taught have found me very helpful.

Teaching Experience:

SAXOPHONE- I have taught young pupils at my old school before for free to gain some experience in teaching. I also play at a high level in the Hillingdon Music Service concert band and Sax Group, as well as in multiple Jazz and Big Bands.I have been on tour to France with the Music Service as well and have played for weddings too. I now have a good level of experience in both playing and teaching.

MATHS- I have been teaching GCSE and lower level maths for a few years now. I was part of a team who a few years ago went to the UK maths challenge representing my region of London. I enjoy teaching maths and in my experience those who i have taught have found me very useful.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that bringing out the passion in the student is what counts, so for music the genre they enjoy most and helping them fall in love with music that way. With maths i believe having a strategic plan of getting a topic or part of maths that the student is struggling with and keeping at it and doing questions and going through the solutions with them until they understand. I understand that many people struggle with maths or may not like it but i find that someone younger (such as myself) teaching them makes it a lot easier on them. Another good way i find with maths is going through questions and helping them understand how to get to the answer rather than just giving the answer and moving on with a simple tick or cross.

Personal Description:
My work history is unwaveringly intertwined with education, teaching a range of subjects, in a range of different settings, with students of all ages and abilities. I have over 15 years experience, the majority of my work has been at secondary level, where my specialisms are English and English Literature, Film studies and Drama. However, I also have extensive experience in primary education where I have taught across the breadth of the curriculum.

My preoccupation with academia was nurtured at a competitive Grammar School, RGS Worcester, a top school with high expectations. I excelled in this environment, always achieving the best academic results. I went on to acquire a first class degree. I remain now, as I have always been, a high achiever.

I also work in the creative arts, as actor, tutor and director, inspired by performance art in all its forms. My current artistic interests include revising classics, puppetry, theatre in non-traditional spaces, and working as a freelance drama consultant to help smaller scale theatre companies realise their artistic aims and consolidate their working practices.

Recreationally I enjoy martial arts, exercise and the outdoors. As an avid reader I am particularly drawn to epic literature and sprawling worlds, beguiling first person narratives, comparative religious and spiritual studies, psychology, philosophy and history.

Secondary Level Education:
- I worked for 6 years as a secondary school teacher, delivering Drama and English lessons, including GCSE and 'A' level, from year 7- year 13.
-I devised and delivered a formal curriculum to teach Year 9 Drama (in line with Key Stage Guidelines).
-Extensive experience in coursework, marking, moderation and exam preparation.
-On 2 separate occasions, following Ofsted observations, I was given an 'Outstanding' classification (the highest classification).
-Quantitative end of term reports always placed my classes amongst the highest in terms of achievement and student retention.
-I also assumed responsibility for cross-curricular teaching, for instance, devising lessons about The Industrial Revolution which spanned History, English, Art and Psychology.

'A' level Education:
-I taught for 6 years at 2 different Further Education Colleges. I taught English Literature, Drama and Film Studies 'A' level.
-Students were offered extra-curricular tutorials to help them achieve their desired results according to their own set of educational needs.
-I emboldened students for university entrance with interview techniques, UCAS procedures and university level preparation.
-The coursework I devised with students for their final A2 Drama and Theatre Studies was picked up as an exemplar of excellent practice, and is still used to this day by Edexcel examination board as a standard to which other schools should aim.

Primary:
-Following my successes at Secondary Education the Local Education Authority sought my services to teach in 'special-measures' primary schools across the West Midlands region.
-I devised a range of workshops, and delivered these to selected primary schools. These workshops raised literacy levels, written and oral communication. They were delivered to year 4, year 5 and year 6 students.
-My work with Redditch Borough Council as Literacy and Outreach Officer earned me an 'Outstanding personal Achievement Award'.
- I have worked as a Supply Teacher in numerous London Primary Schools, teaching all subjects, cross-curricular.

Adult Education:
-I've worked with young people trying to get back into education following exclusion, this involved working with charities like CentrePoint.
-I often work with adult learners re-taking their GCSE English.
-Postgraduate students have sought my help in the past, particularly International Students looking to improve the precision of their essays.

Complex Educational Needs:
-I am trained in Advanced Behaviour Management.
-I have experience working with SEN and PMLD students.

University Level:
-Delivering Theatre and Drama lectures, seminars and workshops to students at university level, including The University of Birmingham, University of Worcester, University of Bristol, and University of Warwick.

Other Achievements:
- Community arts and education provision. Following successful Arts Council grants I set up 2 new community arts and education groups in the West Midlands. The aim here was to build permanent organisations to provide access to education, through the arts, for all, regardless of prior educational achievement. These 2 organisations, both of which are still running to this day, are now self-sustaining businesses, now staffed by people who were once students of the organisation.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring involves the mutual balance of 2 equally important intentions: a sensitive awareness of what a student needs, and establishing a conducive rapport.

I have a flexible communication style, informed by exposure to hosts of different students, I am adaptable and responsive, a necessity built on the recognition that effective learning can only happen when tutor and student understand each other, and are mutually inspired.

At first, my focus with a new student is to provide gentle provocations on different aspects of the subject matter- a process which allows me to see where their strengths and weaknesses lie, also allowing the student to start seeing the subject matter from varying perspectives, and to extend their range of problem-solving and communication strategies.

My approach always depends on the specific needs of the student, most commonly students ask for:
-Information building and comprehension
-Essay writing technique
-Filling in historical/ social/ political or cultural context to areas of study (particularly at 'A' level)
-Response to examination questions
-Improving literacy level, reading and comprehension, grammar (particularly at primary level)
-Extending and developing powers of expression
-Drawing links and developing argument
-Understanding what a question is asking
-The application of knowledge to argument

I pride myself, above all else, on my ability to engage my students. The subjects I teach I find instantly inspiring, and this love of the raw material is compounded by the fact that I genuinely care about the targets my students set for themselves. Each student is a project, and watching them improve over a programme of study is exceptionally gratifying.

You will find me a generous tutor, I am not a clock watcher, it doesn't matter, for instance, if a class runs over. I will work hard for you between lessons, marking, researching, and developing new lessons and academic exercises. I am always well prepared, focused upon specific needs of student, and always an authority on what I'm teaching.

My tutoring style is tempered by profound understanding and experience of examination board and national curriculum requirements. Career Summary

I worked as an accountant for 30 years, culminating in a role as Chief Financial Officer of Ireland's largest insurance company. I have worked with UK and European regulators, and was responsible for managing a multi-billion pound investment portfolio. I worked as a freelance senior finance manager for two years, in the City of London.

Recently I decided to have a career change, and become a secondary school (GCSE and A-Level) teacher, in the Science Department, specialising in Physics. Before starting my teacher training in September 2017 I am spending a term working as a cover teacher, across all subjects and covering Year 7 (11-year olds) through Year 13 (18-year olds).

Personal Details

I live in rural Northamptonshire, and am very excited about my new career. I have a DBS (criminal records check) allowing me to work unsupervised with children. I enjoy travelling, cultural tourism and cooking. I am a non-smoker.

Teaching Experience:

While working as an accountant, I set up and ran the company's trainee accounting scheme and have always enjoyed teaching and coaching, from basic levels to delivering training for Boards of Directors.

I enjoy teaching and coaching my 14-year old daughter, and have some experience coaching primary school Maths (in preparation for Year 6 SATs). I felt called to teaching and have changed careers to enable this. I have recent experience teaching secondary school classes, but enjoy 1:1 coaching very much. I am easy to get on with and can establish good rapport with my students very quickly.

My formal teacher training starts in September 2017, but my life experience and subject matter knowledge make me well suited to the role of tutor. I am largely skewed towards numerical subjects, but am also fastidious in my use of English grammar and writing, due to having spent thirty years providing high quality reports to senior and junior colleagues.

Tutoring Approach:

I very much prefer to work using the syllabus and textbooks with which the student is already familiar, as it can be very confusing to be taught different approaches by a school and by a tutor. If textbooks are unavailable (many schools do not allow textbooks to be taken home), I can probably source them, but at the student/parent's expense.

My style is very engaging, and I seek to understand how my students view the subject, and work with them to fill in any gaps and increase student confidence. I don't like giving rote lessons, which I think are dry and little better than reading the textbook. I really enjoy bringing a subject alive by relating the topic to the real world, and by including interesting facts and information.

Tutoring has to work both for the tutor and the student, and I will always try to make the lessons fun and stimulating. If I don't think the student is benefitting from my tuition, I will discuss this at an early stage. It makes no sense to press on with continued lessons if my approach or the student response is unsatisfactory.

I don't think that every student can become A* grade in every subject, but tuition can increase confidence, improve performance, reduce anxiety, and give a student the best possible chance of fulfilling their potential.
