Personal Description:
I am an elite tutor with a Masters Degree in English Literature from the University of Cambridge. I specialise in English and Drama, and I also speak Italian to near fluency. I studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and I am now a full time theatre director, working freelance. I have worked on shows in the West End, at the National Theatre and the Almeida Theatre among others.

I also have specialist experience of Oxbridge admissions and drama school applications.

My literature specialties are Shakespeare, American literature and all literature of the last thirty years.

Teaching Experience:

I have now been tutoring consistently for over seven years. Every one of my students has achieved the highest possible grade in the subjects in which I have tutored them.

Testimonies from previous students:

'We could never have done it without Tom'

'Tom was everything we could have asked for in a tutor. Helpful, reliable and seemed to gel immediately with our son'

'Tom was able to sort out many difficult areas in the syllabus.
Through the course of the lessons I gained the confidence and clarity needed for a very important exam.
I highly recommend Tom as he is a patient and kind teacher that I believe can provide help to any student struggling with drama.'

I worked as a volunteer teacher at an international school in Swaziland for three months, running drama classes and English classes. I also coached the school rugby team. In the drama classes I focused very much on basic dramatic skills through games and exercises, while the English classes were much more specific, focusing on Shakespeare texts and working in particular on Graham Swift's 'Waterland', which was a set text for the IB exam that year. I am currently affiliated with the National Youth Theatre as well as several drama schools; I work with educational projects in theatres and drama schools around London, working closely and extensively with students and young people.

Tutoring Approach:

When I tutor I like to be very open and conversational with the student. What is especially important is that the student comes away with the belief not that they have been dictated to, but that they have discovered things for themselves. I ask a lot of questions, guiding the student towards a conclusion rather than imposing it directly. This makes for a very interactive and exciting experience, an experience that contrasts perfectly with the proscriptive, curricular methods of traditional schoolteaching.

My approach also enables me to adapt to the needs of each individual student, and to have conversations both with them and with their parents. I recognise that each tutee has specific, unique needs, and I am totally prepared to adjust my style to such needs.

Personal Description:
I have a first-class honours degree in History and a master's degree in American Studies (History). During my master's, I specialised in vernacular history, particularly the social, ideological and political significance of post-9/11 Islamic hip-hop.

I am a freelance marketing consultant, with a focus on content and copywriting, working in the tech, property, psychological wellbeing, HR and social development sectors. I am currently away travelling so I can only provide online tuition. I love to read, write, paint and travel.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 8 years' tuition experience, having initially worked as a peer History tutor at Bridgewater State University (USA) in 2008 followed by working as a GCSE English tutor for the Tutor Trust in 2011-12. I have been tutoring privately since 2009.

At the Tutor Trust I delivered small group tuition sessions and taught large group revision classes in Manchester's disadvantaged schools and colleges.

Tutoring Approach:

TUITION
I take a structured approach to tutoring and develop a clear plan with objectives for the student and I to reach together. I work at the student's own pace and provide bespoke tuition which is tailored to the student's needs and learning style. My sessions are clear, engaging and stimulating.

My tutoring style is to facilitate rather than teach. I guide the student in the right direction and provide additional support to help with study skills, time management and organisation skills. Ultimately, I encourage the student to build more confidence in his/her own ability.

PROOFREADING & THESIS SUPPORT
I provide proofreading services for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework. I check grammar and spelling to an excellent standard and offer in-depth feedback on analysis/argument, structure, knowledge/understanding, sources and referencing, and style and presentation to help students to achieve the grade they are aiming for.

Personal Description:
I first started tutoring some of my fellow students in Elementary Logic during my second year at University and greatly enjoyed helping people improve their understanding of the subject and gain higher marks. Once my degree was completed I began tutoring A-Level students in Religious Studies and Philosophy in the Leeds area before moving to East Sussex.

The potential of tutoring can only be maximised if each student feels comfortable in lessons, so I actively try to cultivate a good working relationship with each student. After all, if I were not enthusiastic and passionate about the subject it would be impossible to motivate any students to be enthusiastic about it! So far all my students have improved their performance by at least by two grade boundaries following tuition with me.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked with students with a broad range of abilities, from those that need some extra help to reach their full potential, to those that aren't in mainstream schooling and as such don't have any previous knowledge of the subject. Some students are very visual in their learning, others are very shy and need a lot of encouragement to speak, and there are others who are extremely capable if you ask them the right questions. Using a range of resources I can tailor a programme of study to suit each student.

During my time tutoring I have noticed how easily students can lose confidence in their abilities, which at times can be a barrier in their learning. By encouraging students to ask questions, looking at what they are doing right and breaking down topics into their simplest formulation, I help the individual gain confidence in the subject and the skills to answer questions fully.3

Tutoring Approach:

My role as tutor is not only to help the student understand the concepts involved but also to gain the confidence to discuss those concepts in an analytical manner. Religious Studies and Philosophy are disciplines that greatly benefit from one-on-one tuition due to the complexity of the issues. In large lesson groups individuals can easily become confused and aren't always able to receive the instant feedback needed to further explore the subject matter.

As a tutor not only do I expand students' knowledge base but also engage students in a positive way with the subject. If students have been finding a subject difficult their enjoyment of learning can become affected and they can lose the motivation needed to gain a broader understanding. By showing enthusiasm for my subject and using relevant examples and discussion points I reintegrate fun back into learning about the subject.

Personal Description:
I'm a very friendly 19 year old student at Loughborough University studying Sports Technology, this is a unique course consisting of Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, and Sports Science modules.
I have 3 little brothers so I have some experience in helping them with their maths.

I have always been good at mathematics, finding it easy to understand and learn. I achieved A* at GCSE and A at A Level.
I have a brother who has just achieved an A* at GCSE maths who I had helped in the areas in which he struggled. I also have a brother who I helped pass his common entrance maths exam 2 years ago at the age of 13.

I am also a ski and snowboard instructor and have been since the age of 16, so I am very experienced in teaching all ages of students.

I am confident in my mathematical ability and my ability to teach.

Teaching Experience:

I have assisted in my brothers' maths exams in the areas they struggled in (GCSE and Common Entrance).
I am also a very experienced ski and snowboard instructor so have lots of teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:

I would have to do all tutoring on my computer using Skype as I am currently at University.
I would be able to help with their homework difficulties and coaching towards upcoming exams.

Personal Description:
After a career as a Communications Manager and having finished my PhD, I'm determined to commit myself completely to my professional vocation and teach Spanish as a foreign language full-time

I have a profound awareness of the language as a journalist, and specific training in public speaking in Spanish.

I recently completed the Specialist Training Course in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language given by the Department of Spanish and E/LE Teacher Training of International House Madrid.

Teaching Experience:

My experience as a teacher started 35 years ago, in 1981, when I obtained the Spanish Teaching Certificate for High School Education. From that time, I've been working continuously, full-time, part-time or voluntarily, as a teacher or tutor.

Throughout my professional life I've provided a great deal of private tuition in Spanish language in Madrid, Leeds and Edinburgh, and have worked as an assistant teacher in Spanish at several public high schools.

I've delivered over 350 courses to a wide range of organizations.

Tutoring Approach:

The best way to learn a language is to see it in context and have a necessity to use it. That is why I use as much as possible real people as my listening resources and expect my students to interact with other native speakers. My courses comprise theory classes where I look at listening, speaking and learning skills as well as increasing vocabulary; and cultural activities where those skills can be put into action.

The anonymous reviews by my students have been consistently very good, citing my knowledge, teaching methods, classroom organisation, willingness to learn new skills, and enthusiasm as highlights of the courses.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced language teacher and examiner. A native French speaker, I tutor students of all ages, from primary to undergraduates.

Teaching Experience:

Since my PGCE, I have taught languages in secondary schools for 13 years; French to A level and Spanish to GCSE.

I am an examiner for one of the country's leading examination boards and mark examination papers. In the summer I conduct speaking tests in schools.

I have taught French in primary schools and after-school clubs and tutor people wanting to learn languages for pleasure or to help them communicate more effectively on holiday.

I also work with language undergraduates and support students wishing to achieve or improve their grade at the examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, patient and tailor my lessons to individual needs. My aim is to build confidence in speaking and using languages by using a variety of materials and making learning fun. I regularly use games to practise or reinforce vocabulary and grammatical structures. I aim to make all my lessons fun and enjoyable, though with a clear focus on learning outcomes.

Personal Description:
Having gained plenty of experience both through my own studies and tutoring other students I am able to help tutees look at their subject matter from a different perspective. Given my previous studies and my Masters that I have just recently finished studying for I can relate to students study problems easily and help them with areas they are struggling to tackle. This includes from a study perspective but also the challenges of balancing life with study. Having an outsider take a look at their problems can often help.

I have obtained a 2:1 LLB Law Degree, completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice Course and a Masters in Real Estate. My previous jobs have included residential conveyancing and contract law / management within a recruitment company. Currently I work in the Property Department at DP World regularly dealing with commercial and property legal issues.

I hope that my own passion and determination for studying, learning and self-development is passed on to the tutees to help them with their own studies and future careers.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience in personal tutoring has covered a range of legal modules contained within A-Levels and Degrees. These have included Equity & Trust, Land Law, Contract Law, Family Law and European Law. This has been a combination of one-to-one teaching through the duration of a course or helping students with their assignments by reviewing their questions and giving them my initial thoughts on the subject matter and providing guidance on how to approach the issue at hand or proof reading their drafts and providing comments.

A number of students have also asked for assistance in re-sits of their exams. This can either lead to complete reviews of a module or looking at key aspects which a student has struggled with. In all cases it is important to identify what the issues have been which have led to the re-sit.

Whether a student requires assistance from a distance through online tutoring or a one-to-one approach, I will give 100% to help them achieve their full capability.

Tutoring Approach:

At no point do I write the assignment for students or simply provide them with the answers. This will not assist the student in progressing on their course or make me feel that tutoring is worthwhile. Through my own experiences I find that relating the principles / subject matter to real life situations works best. Depending on the student it may also be a case of repetition on a certain subject matter which they are unable to obtain from their existing teaching format. The most important part is finding what works best for the student and then progressing from there.

Some students prefer to interface in person, others through emails, phone calls, Skype or a combination of these formats. Should a student be close enough in location then one-to-one tutoring is available.

Personal Description:
Hello there! My name is Sam and I'm a full time private tutor who has moved back to London this year. I completed a master's degree in maths at Leeds University and have been teaching ever since. I'm still very passionate about maths and am applying for a PhD to start in the next academic year. My personal time is taken up by studying the areas of maths I want to pursue (category theory and topos theory), learning more undergraduate maths courses so that I can tutor a wider number of areas, rock climbing, highlining and playing gigs. I also have a few maths related side projects such as co-writing a maths textbook aimed at those who have just finished their A levels, and error checking/giving feedback for a soon-to-be published book on topos theory by a researcher in Canada. I enjoy a productive life focussed around my passions of which teaching comes first, as I find nothing more satisfying than helping people and seeing their grades grow. I really appreciate you taking the time to see what I have to offer as a tutor, and hope to hear from you soon.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching in a variety of different areas and environments has been my primary source of work for nearly 8 years now. For the past year and a half since I finished my masters I have been a full time private tutor of maths, predominately working in Leeds. The variety of levels I've had the opportunity to teach has been exceptional. I have taught at GCSE, As, A and further maths level for school level maths along with teaching at every level of undergraduate mathematics, teaching both on a one to one basis and conducting group tutorials with groups of 20 second year students. In particular, it has been deeply gratifying to help foreign students secure undergraduate positions and students with health issues who have needed extra assistance due to being absent from school.
During my degree, I held weekly tutorials for the lower years and gave informal guitar lessons. During my gap year, I worked for six days a week as a climbing instructor for most of the year and taught guitar on my day off. It was over my A level years that I got my first teaching experience as a piano teacher.

Tutoring Approach:

One great difference and indeed benefit of being a private tutor over a teacher is the need to adapt to each individual student. I am in the great position of being able to focus on one student per lesson, and I wouldn't be doing the best work I can if I didn't take advantage of this. My style of teaching therefore revolves around learning from each lesson about the student's evolving strengths and weaknesses, so that I can focus my lesson planning around them for our next meeting. Along with this, I try to encourage students with positive reinforcement. Frankly speaking, maths is a scary subject for a lot of people and I have found that increasing a student's confidence in their ability does wonders for their grades, proving their confidence right. Patience and understanding are key to this form of encouragement. On top of all this, I have to take into account what level the student is studying at. Maths is a very different beast every single year, the challenge of understanding quadratic equations for the first time is very different in nature to understanding quotient groups for the first time, and so I change how I teach depending on the level and age of the student.

Personal Description:
I am a recently retired Clinical Scientists (registered). I am married with a son and I am a youthful 67 year old with an 8 years old son! We are a non smoking family. My involvement with "mathematics", at various levels, dates back to when I left secondary school (Blackpool) in 1964 and worked for the Civil Service for 5 years. I was in an accounts division and passed two additional maths (and eventually English!) O'Levels via evening classes as well as enjoying the 60s and playing bass guitar in local groups. I took a 1 year full time A''Level course (Maths, Further Maths and Physics) and subsequently read for a Mathematics degree (Physics subsid.) at the University of Nottingham (1970-73). During this time, I had 3 vacation studentships with different departments of the Scientific Civil Service. After graduating, I worked for around 15 years as a computer programmer / analyst during which time I passed an HND in Computer Studies (University of the South Bank, London). Although I was 40 years old when I was made redundant from a communications company, I decide to make a significant career change and return to my "roots" and look for scientific work where my mathematical skills would be better used. After 2 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer in the lung function laboratory at the Royal Brompton, I had the tools and experience to apply for a research post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School (RPGMS, Hammersmith Hospital).

I retired in 2014 after 25 years as a researcher / Clinical Scientist at the RPGMS and Royal London. A large part of my research involved mathematical analysis of breathing patterns and flow-volume curves. This involved developing techniques and algorithms for alternative methods of assessing "lung function". I published many papers in international medical journals and all included a significant maths / stats content. During this time, I took evening classes obtaining additional A' Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Statistics and then read for an M Sc in General Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Kings College London. In 2005, my portfolio was reviewed by the Health Professions Council and I registered as Clinical Scientist, which is a protected title, The main reason for the additional qualifications was my passion for learning and the thrill of sitting examinations and testing myself. The addition A'Levels and M. Sc. were taken for the challenge and pleasure and were not directly relevant to my career. One important reason for offering private tuition is my love of teaching / learning and I miss my close involvement with the "sciences". I have been accepted as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador and I have an enhanced DBS check certificate.

Teaching Experience:

Although, I do not have formal teaching qualification and I only started offering private tuition at the beginning of 2015, I am a patient person who has tutored a range of tutees from Common Entrance Exam level to adult learner including CGSE students for both Mathematics and Statistics.

However, my "teaching" roles / experiences go back to the mid 60s helping friends struggling with the Civil Service maths entrance exams and later, post graduation, I taught maths, unpaid, to several children of friends as well as adult friends and colleagues who needed to obtain better qualification. My research positions included (i) formal teaching / lecturing roles at all levels e.g. work experience students, medical / nursing students, visiting medics, junior members of the lab staff as well as registrars and consultants; (ii) presenting the research at local, national and international meetings and (iii) giving guest lectures on B. Sc. and M Sc. courses.

In my research / technical support work, I found particular pleasure explaining to children and parents the purpose and science that underpinned the tests and the analysis and interpretation of the results. This was a unique experience for almost all of them. It gave them and me a lot of pleasure and improved the success problems. In my own time, I helped patients, some who missed a lot of school time due to their problems, with both school work in the sciences and others with projects related to the maths and biology of their respiratory problems. Invariably, they ended up knowing more than their teachers!

Tutoring Approach:

As George Orwell never said "All tutees are not the same but some are more different than others".

I have a variety of approaches, depending on factors such as (i) whether the tutee needs teaching or revision; (ii) the number of lessons the tutee can fit in before the exam; (iii) their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their interests; (iv) whether the tutee is struggling to keep up or a flyer needing to ensure an A* (v) the length of the sessions 45-90 mins and whether it is one or two session a week and (vi) the work they are able to do between sessions.

However, there are aspects that are common to all tutees: before starting the lessons, I am happy to meet for a chat (no charge) to spend as long as necessary clarifying important issue such as (i) which board, level and paper they will be sitting; (ii) the text book they use and which parts of the syllabus have been covered and whether any need revising or explaining and (iii) wherever possible, obtaining suggestions and feedback from their teachers including where marks had been lost in recent exams.

Other aspects of my approach include (i) the tutee attempting appropriate questions / papers from other boards to encourage and foster "thinking outside the box" and, thus, to be prepared for questions that do not fit the usual mode; (ii) e-mailing questions of papers in advance of session to allow adequate time for preparation; (iii) feeding back how sessions have gone and suggestions for changes and being available between session via e-mail; (iv) moving up and down the difficulty ladder depending on the progress; (v) working on exam technique and teaching how to not misinterpret questions, sometimes, badly written; (vi) preparing tutees for difficult topics about to be taught at school, to ensure they get the most out of upcoming lessons; (vii) using examples from everyday life to demonstrate the use and usefulness of maths and statistics outside of the classroom and (viii) building up confidence and aiming to engender a passion and love of the subject and learning, in general.

I make extensive use of marking schemes and examiners reports to discuss how the tutee may have obtained the correct answer but lost marks due to not showing their working or lost time providing irrelevant details and this has been very successful and interesting for the tutees.

Some of my feedback:
(i) As a Year 11 student, Peter has been providing me with extra mathematics tuition during the final months before my GCSE examinations, offering distinct, concise teaching within a relaxed but highly enjoyable and yet professional environment. As a mathematician, Peter has aided me in approaching mathematics from a somewhat more lateral perspective, exploring multiple methods that could be employed to solve a challenging question; a form of thinking that is seldom used within a typical school environment. Peter's abundant, infectious passion for both his tuition and mathematics manifests itself within his unswerving support and guidance during our sessions together, delivering a uniquely engaging teaching environment within which to learn, but most importantly, to enjoy learning mathematics!"

(ii) Parent of a Year 11 school girl: Hello Peter, thank you for your follow up, your emails always have an interesting flair about them. We also enjoyed our meeting and Ebony particularly liked your relaxed approach to the subject, for that reason alone I think she would benefit from being able to ask questions without feeling awkward about what she doesn't understand, most importantly I agree with your 'spades a spade' philosophy in how to interpret the syllabus into the real world.

(iii) Teacher's reply to an e-mail from the mother of a Common Entrance school boy: Thank you for your email. I am pleased Edward has a good tutor and is happy doing extra Maths. The best paper to prepare Edward for our end of year test would be a practice SATs test as they follow a similar format to ours.

(iv) A recent GCSE student, EDEXCEL Higher, via his mother: Peter, I obtained and A in my Stats paper and B in my maths paper and I was told by my teacher that it might be worth remarking, as I was only several marks away from the A Grade)

Consulting the 'breakdown' of my overall Mathematics grade, it appears as though I (thanks to your support) did exceptionally well within the non-calculator paper (the equivalent of a very high A/ very low A* in terms of marks), but it was simply a few questions at the end of the calculator paper (that seemed to baffle everyone, regardless of ability) that partially pushed my overall grade down.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and guidance; I certainly would not have been able to achieve my result within the NON-calculator paper, the paper that I claimed was more intimidating, without our sessions within the Library. You have improved not only my proficiency, but also my confidence in Maths enormously and for that I cannot thank you enough.

(v) Father of a schoolgirl (EDEXCEL Higher): "E" did very well overall and passed all 13 ! In Maths she was one point off a B so of course that's a C. I think we will request a remark for the maths paper. Many thanks again for your help in the past, best wishes.

Personal Description:
A First Class Masters Graduate in Civil Engineering from City University London, currently working as a Graduate Highway Engineer for the major international engineering firm Jacobs. As an Engineer, my role is primarily to solve problems, which I believe is a valuable skill to have at any level, something I wish to pass on to my students.I am more than happy to spend my hours out of work as a Maths and Eleven+ tutor. I have a huge passion for teaching. I believe I have a vast array of experience and knowledge to offer. As well as a strong background in maths, you can see form my studies I am also a keen artist and therefore love to use my creativity in teaching. I'm an extremely well organised individual and have in the past set up my own volunteering organisation for students.

Teaching Experience:

I have a range of experience in tutoring Maths for GCSE and A level students, as well as experience in tutoring students at foundation degree level. I have in particular worked with struggling students in the past, helping them from limited understanding to gaining a great degree of confidence and enthusiasm pre-examination. I also act as a professional mentor for an undergraduate student at City University, helping to develop essential life skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very easy going and honest person, eager to make learning fun and enthusiastic about teaching. I believe it is important for my students not to just learn but to understand. I am very flexible and able to adapt my teaching style to fit the ability of my student.

I am open minded and can relate to all different types of students and able to adapt my teaching style accordingly. I realize that there are many different forms of learning, broken down more primarily into visual and auditory as such. In modern society today, our concentration spans are consistently decreasing. The approach I like to take is to be demonstrative. This allows my students to engage with the subject, use their imagination and practical thinking. In turn, the students are more enthusiastic about learning and in this way more likely to understand the concepts as opposed to going through the motions. I always do my absolute best to maximize the potential of all my students.

My vision is for my students to not feel as if studying is a chore, but something they look forward to on a daily basis.

Personal Description:
I was born in South Yorkshire. I grew up in Rotherham before gaining a English/History degree in Manchester followed by a PGCE at Sheffield Hallam University.
I am married and have a 10 year old stepson. My interests include reading, music, education, sport, keep fit, current affairs and walking.
I moved down to Devon in September 2016 and am loving the lifestyle down here.
I love my job and feel that my enthusiasm stimulates and encourages my students to excel.

Teaching Experience:

Having gained my PGCE I taught for 9 years in medium-sized village school in a picturesque part of Derbyshire. I very much enjoyed my time there and gained some invaluable experience. I then took up a middle-management post at a suburban school in Doncaster. This was a different experience which enabled me to work with children of many different abilities allowing me develop efficient and successful teaching strategies.
I have a wide range of experience in teaching children from year one to year six. Over the last two years I have done supply work in numerous schools in South Yorkshire allowing me to remain up to date with current trends in teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer a friendly, encouraging approach to tuition. I aim to put children at their ease, developing confidence, but like to cover as much ground as possible in the time we have. I ensure students (and their parents) receive clear feedback alongside targets for future development and set additional work to complete between lessons where appropriate. I have a flexible approach to tutoring based on the requirements of the student/parent. Lessons focus on building confidence, consolidating and developing concepts or focusing on specific areas requiring support.
Children learn in different ways and I always endeavour to teach in a manner that complements the student's preferred learning style. I monitor progress using formal and informal methods of assessment and encourage children to use self assessment.
Students can learn by either visiting my home, me visiting them or at a distance using Skype.
