View Claire's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Claire: Hello, My name is Claire Woodhead. I'm currently in my third year at John Moores University in Liverpool studying to become a Primary School teacher. My main subjects are maths and English at primary level but I am also a keen art enthusiast and pursued this at school completing my A level in Fine art. For the past three months I have been working in Austria as an Au pair living with a family of four children. This gave me the opportunity to greatly improve my German and also work closely with children. |
Teaching Experience: Studying on a teaching degree, I have so far completed two teaching placements. This I feel counts towards my formal teaching experience. My informal teaching experiences also include my work with a local cub scout group and also teaching the children in my Au pair job simple English. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a relaxed approach to learning. I feel that the child needs to feel secure and safe in the place they are learning. They also have to want to learn, therefore especially with younger children, tutoring would encompass games and activities that involved kinesthetic processes as well as visual and auditory learning. An example of this would be to act out a paragraph from a text using props and expression, allowing the child to become involved in the text aiding their understanding. Teaching german to a higher level, I would still encompass the kineasthetic learning approach using language cue cards and role play to aid grammar understanding. The use of music can also aid learning in this situation, reading and learning from text and paragraphs in german that are of relevance to the student can also greatly aid development and support the work the child does at school. |

| About Hazel: I am a freelance journalist with a degree and MA in English language and computational linguistics. I work from home and contribute on a regular basis to the Guardian, Telegraph, Independent and many of the major music magazines. I am a qualified subeditor and used to edit Muso, a classical music magazine. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught at Leeds University on the linguistics degree course and also in the computing department in HTML programming. I have experience of teaching English as a foreign language at residential summer camps and I have undertaken degree modules in the application of teaching methods for EFL. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a holistic approach to tutoring, believing that it's sometimes better to start from the beginning and understand the problem as a whole before focusing on details. Often the problem can be much larger than spelling or grammar and it is therefore necessary to get back to basics first. I am informal and approachable with a sense of fun! |

After my civilian service I studied "Popular Music and Media Management" at the University of Paderborn, Germany, which I will complete this term with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Furthermore I had piano lessons for 10 years and am playing the bass guitar for 6 years. I am also a autodidact in rhythm guitar and able to teach the basic concepts. |

Tutoring Approach: Learning a foreign language and about a different culture can be a lot of fun. Although some rules, especially grammar, have to be learned by heart. I can offer you German classes with a lot of real life examples, such as music, films, literature, TV shows and magazines. | About Andrew: I am a 23 year old student, currently training to be a doctor at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. I have a passion for science and mathematics and endeavor to share this with my students. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutoring experience teaching GCSE and A level science and mathematics. As I am a student myself I am very aware of the pressures and difficulties of studying and revising for exam success. I am able to offer the skills, to my students, which I have used to achieve the highest grades at GCSE, A Level and degree level. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that anyone has the ability to learn difficult material if it is presented to them in a way that best suits their learning style: You don't have to be a genius to learn rocket science, you just need a good teacher! I believe that it is the duty of the teacher to adapt their teaching methods to match their student and to make the material enjoyable and applicable. The major advantage of one-to-one teaching is that the teaching style can be matched to the student in a way that is not possible in the classroom. |

View Steven, Patrick, James's Profile
Types of Tutoring: From their home
| About Steven, Patrick, James: I am a teacher by nature. I care deeply about the French language and helping people who struggle with the language to know that it can be easy. I put in 100% effort and if I can exceed 100% then that's great but if I cannot I know when it's time to move on. I have high expectations from people and from myself. |
Teaching Experience: During my four months living and working in France, I helped many of my French colleagues with their French. Furthermore during my first year in college, I gave lessons to a Leaving Certificate honours student again in French and he did quite well. |
Tutoring Approach: I am compassionate and allow people their time to figure it out for themselves. However, nothing is more important than hard work and I believe if you are in a classroom you are there to learn. With regard to the French language, one must work on pronunciation and getting the basics right before you proceed to the next level. I am fair but strict when I have to. There is nothing worse than non-participation and everyone regardless of level should get involved. This is applied to all type classes. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Sarah Marie: With a BA Hons degree I am knowledgeable and love to share this with others. I am extremely friendly, bubbly and enthusiastic about many things, especially subjects that I am passionate about. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught both private and group classes in many schools around Staffordshire, working with pupils from 4 up to 19 years of age. My key areas are English, Drama, Singing and Art. |
Tutoring Approach: I am extremely friendly tutor, tailoring my teaching style to fit the needs of each individual pupil. I believe an informal environment is always more pleasurable to work in and more often than not it promotes learning, as the pupil feels at ease. |
