About Sophie:
I am a french native speaker, I have been in edinburgh since the beginning of July. I am friendly, patient and dynamic, I do enjoy sharing my knowledge of the french language. I have the capacity to adapt myself easily to make people feel comfortable in their learning.

Teaching Experience:

I have been helping children with difficulties in a french secondary school for two years. I was in charge of several groups of pupils aged from 11 to 16, I was teaching different subjects, such as history, english, maths, french, geography. My aim was to find a way to make the pupils understand what they had missed in their courses.
I have been working with children for 8 years in different area; as a group leader, as a teacher, as a student in psychology, as a baby-sitter.
I have a french diploma in children care, I have a degree in psychology.

Tutoring Approach:

The best way to learn a language is to enjoy it, to feel it like a way to communicate with different people. I think it is really essential to like the way you are learning, that will make you improve quickly and easily!
I am able to give classical french courses but I really do think that tutoring is a place for something different. It seems to be the perfect time to practise french for real and to share all the knowledge of this language.

About J.:
I am a fully qualified teacher, who left her teaching position to travel some years ago, and fell in love with the Arctic! After various adventures (including gaining my MA, beginning my PhD and working at the University Writing Centre) I have returned home, and am happily planning to return to teaching. I have just enrolled on a Return to Teaching course in Cambridge and would like very much to continue my work as a tutor in the evenings, both to earn money for my course and because I thoroughly enjoy it!
(September 2008)

Teaching Experience:

In 1989 I graduated from my PGCE course with a Distinction, having focussed specifically on English and History. I then taught in a secondary school in North England for some ten years, before leaving (prior, I thought, to applying for a head of department position) to travel for a year.

On my return I worked as a basic skills, English and Maths tutor on various occasions, and also as a Nanny, before returning to the Arctic where I continued to work with language via an MA and then a PhD course, and as a tutor in the university Writing Centre. Most recently I have worked as a self-employed EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher for adults in Cambridge.

Having decided that I miss full-time teaching, and working with younger students, I am undertaking a Return to Teaching course at Anglia Ruskin University in order to update my knowledge of education policy etc before applying for a position in a school.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel strongly that all teaching should be focussed upon students as individuals, and that it is possible to work through a student's weaknesses by working with their strengths - this generally means that lessons are also more interesting and enjoyable for the student!

Lessons should also be flexible, in that they respond to student's own questions and any problems that they might be having - and yet ultimately focussed on improving specific skills (for example reading aloud, writing clearly or mental arithmatic). Organisation on both sides (teacher and student) is very important - listening to students and working patiently together is vital.

About Ralph:
I recently graduated from Bristol University with a 2.1 in Classics and have settled here permanently. I am an easy-going, amiable and approachable individual. In my spare time I play in a band and am very passionate about music, literature and film.

Teaching Experience:

I have little teaching experience although I come from a family of teachers so I guess it is in the blood. I have taught guitar a bit to good response and effect.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that when it comes to teaching at school, a lot of the time the actual concept and basics of subjects are not given the required time. Once you have learned exactly how to solve a problem it becomes far easier to revise, rather than being taught simply what to do when faced by it. This skill is applicable to all subjects, especially maths and physics, and in my experience has helped enourmously when it comes to exams.

About Emma:
I am a confident, outgoing and friendly graduate with a passion for music and learning. I attending Oxford University and have always enjoyed both sharing and my own and learning new skills. I love film and literature as well as socialising and meeting new people. I am a caring person and am always keen to help people.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience has been within the field of music. I have taught private bassoon and singing lessons and also taught beginner theory.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to use a heuristic style of teaching so that the student does not feel they are being dictated to. I believe for the student to feel as though they have reached the conclusion themselves without being told is more rewarding. I also enjoy an interactive lesson, especially if leaning music, so that different topics are taught in different ways so as to keep the students attention and engagement with the subject. Overall i want to make learning fun and not something that they are going to dread.

About Craig:
I am currently a PhD student studying neuropharmacology (study drugs on brain function) at Strathclyde University. I attained a first class honours degree in biomedical science, which covered chemistry and biology as well as mathematics. I am a friendly outgoing person who never judges anyone. I love teaching people, and feel I have a talent for identifying analogies that is easily identified by people to help them understand complicated subjects. Also as i am still currently studying, i am constantly improving my own knowledge and keeping my current knowledge fresh.

Teaching Experience:

Although I have no teaching qualifications, I have tutored friends and relatives in science and maths. Whilst at university, my fellow students all sought assistance in nearly every subject covered in our course and helped them pass subjects which they could not have otherwise.

Tutoring Approach:

As mentioned previously, I focus on understanding, I don't see the point in memorising terminology without knowing what these terms mean. I also like to encourage people to think of their own analogies to help them remember. I am also very attentive to problems people might have in understanding certain areas and I am not scared to alter my approach. I am not from a privileged background and was hardly a model student at school, but I think this gives me ideal experience to pass on to students who are in the same position I was.

About Chau:
I'm Vietnamese but i can speak English fluently.
I have done my A levels in the UK and got 4A in Maths, Further Maths , Physics and Economics.
For Maths and Further Maths, I both got over 95%.
I'm currently studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UCL.
I enjoy helping people and have good communication skills.

Teaching Experience:

I haven't got any experience in tutoring, however I have been helping my classmates with maths and physics problems during my school times.

Tutoring Approach:

In my opinion, a good tutor should be able to identify the problems quickly and then be able to explain to student in the most simple way. I also think the tutor should be able to make the student feel comfortable, not put so much pressure on the student so that the student can work more efficiently. A good tutor also need to be patient and a good listener.

About Trang:
I am a female student, currently doing Chemical Engineering degree at the University of Nottingham. I achieved excellent results for my A-level and my degree, specially on Maths, Chemistry and Physics. Being friendly and calm with a great of passion on helping people. I am also an understanding person, that can help students to overcome their problems and create a passion for the subject they might not like.
I have no car, so it's the best if you're living near my place and your place can be easily reached by bus (or if it's very near, I can bike there). Or if you want to study in a public place like library, it is fine for me

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a tutor since I was at high-school. I taught the younger students maths and english and sciences.
I taught children in summer holiday as a voluteer on the program helping children.

Tutoring Approach:

I studied A-level with 4 subject maths, further maths, chemistry, accounting and got good results, so personally from my own experience, I know what is the most important that students need to learn, and how to get the highest scores.
I can go through slowly through all the stuffs if it's neccessary for my tutees to understand and can solve problem by themselves.
For tutees that are lack of foundation knowledge, my experience is helping them go through the basis until they fully understand, then improve their weakness by practice, helping them improve their logical thought, so that they will not just apply the knowledge machenically for a particular problem, but can solve any other problems.

About Eileen:
I am English, married to an Italian and I lived for 8 years in Italy (Sicily), where our three now grown-up children were all born. I have a deep love of both Italy and the Italian language, history and culture and I re-visit the country as often as possible. I live on the outskirts of Nantwich, Cheshire, some 7 miles, and less than 10 minutes driving time, from junction 16 on the M6. I am happy to teach individuals, couples or small groups (max. 4).

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching Italian professionally for 18 years by private tuition, in colleges (South Cheshire College, Mid-Cheshire College and at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester) and also in industry for 9 years, within the FIAT U.K group of companies.

Tutoring Approach:

I greatly enjoy helping adults of all ages and language experience to learn to speak, read and write Italian. My aim is to bring both Italy and the Italian language alive for my students in whatever way they require for their own personal needs and interests, and to enable them to discover the thrill of being able to speak and understand Italian. I do not believe that someone who has never had the opportunity to learn a language before, or feels worried that they were not very good at languages at school, presents any barrier to me being able to help them learn Italian, provided that they are willing to work with me to achieve this goal. I particularly enjoy giving students one-to-one personalised and targeted tuition and I will always work at the student's own pace. Learning any language should be a pleasure and I try to ensure for all my students that learning Italian with me is a most enjoyable, stress-free and rewarding experience.

About Reza:
I am a 19 year old student and I am currently in my 2nd year of studying medicine at King's College London. I am a keen sportsman and I play for my university's football team. I also enjoy tennis, swimming and going to the gym. I am a person who knows the value of education, which is why I always encourage others to take their studies seriously. I take great satisfaction everytime I help my fellow students with their studies.

Finally, living in a multicultural city, I thoroughly enjoy interacting with people of all cultures and backgrounds.

Teaching Experience:

Before going to university, I voluntarily tutored year 9 and GCSE students at school. I found this very enjoyable as I felt I was making a difference in other people's education.

I am currently mentoring year 1 medical students who are unfamiliar with university education.

Tutoring Approach:

Having been taught by excellent teachers, I will use many of their techniques in my tutoring approach. Having recently been through most of these exams myself, I will know the strategies that will help my tutees feel confident about answering exam questions.

I am also a very patient person, which is a very useful attribute since some students can take a while to understand certain concepts.
