About Alastair:
I am a highly qualified English & Drama teacher who is friendly, patient, organised and who focuses on getting the best possible exam result for your child. I also come with a genuine passion for my subject and the needs of the individual student.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English Literature & language for the past 5 years both in the UK & abroad. I have worked in both the state and private sector and am currently leading drama workshops across the UK as well as tutoring in and around London.

Tutoring Approach:

In my mind, private tutoring is about providing pupils with the support and encouragement they need to further their understanding of a certain subject or overcome a specific educational hurdle.

I find the intimacy of one-to-one tuition invaluable as it allows me to focus on the specific needs of an individual rather than the general needs of a whole class.

I believe in identifying the difficulties a student is facing and then tailoring my lesson to suit their specific needs. I like to work with students at their own pace and believe that an empathetic relationship is the key to good teaching.

Most importantly however, I have a real enthusiasm for my subject and have learnt that when I use this thoughtfully, I am able to spark the student's interest so that they both enjoy and contribute towards the process of learning.

About Todd:
I'm a 21-year-old student at Newcastle University and I'm currently in my second year of a medicine degree (MBBS). I am an enthusiastic and keen learner and these qualities are reflected in my teaching, which I have always enjoyed alongside my work and studies.

Before deciding that I wanted to become a doctor I started a mathematics degree at Bath University but left the course after the first semester to return to my home town of Sheffield and work in early 2006. Alongside my full-time job in administration at the Sheffield Children's Hospital I started tutoring GCSE and A-Level students in mathematics and science and continued to do so until starting my current degree course last year.

I am also self-taught in HTML and BASIC programming and have designed various programs and tools in my past employment as well as my leisure time. More about me, including a full list of my qualifications, experience and the tuition I offer, can be found on my website which is listed on Google when you search for my name.

Teaching Experience:

I occasionally taught GCSE and A-Level students in mathematics and science for nearly two years before beginning my current degree course in medicine last year. Most of my students were taking mathematics at GCSE since mathematics is the subject in which I am most highly qualified; this often involved trying to inspire enthusiasm and confidence in the subject as much as actual teaching due to it being so widely disliked as a subject!

During this time I also took an intensive Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course which gave me a good range of transferable teaching skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to take a very individual-focussed approach to my tuition and will choose the approach that seems to best suit the student and their particular aims. For some students, purely problem-based classes are the most beneficial in which we work through various questions and exercises that the student has been set by the school tutors and work towards increasing the student's confidence in tackling such problems without supervision. I will also set tasks myself which I will either go through with the student or leave with them as light homework before the next session.

If a student is finding a range of aspects of their course difficult then I will devise a more structured approach to teaching, working closely with the course syllabus and planning a series of sessions around the sorts of areas the student finds most challenging. I have also previously used my knowledge of computer programming to design simple applications for students to use at home to further help their learning, such as interactive flash cards or step-by-step algorithms for solving particular types of mathematical problems.

In any case I find it important to have a good relationship with my students since private tuition can often feel a bit overwhelming for them, particularly if all they've only ever been taught in large groups in state schools. Being younger than most of the wider teaching community however, I am generally found less intimidating to students than school tutors! I have a friendly and enthusiastic manner in my teaching and believe that private tuition should be about empowering students rather than simply pointing out what they don't know.

About Victoria:
I am a qualified and practising Teacher of English in a North Yorkshire secondary school. I would like to think that I am personable and friendly whilst striving for each student to do their very best at both Key Stage 3 and GCSE.

Teaching Experience:

I am in my third year of teaching at secondary level and therefore experienced in teaching English at both Key Stage 3 and GCSE. I am also a practising personal tutor and have successfully guided students of varying ability and special needs through their GCSEs on a one-to-one basis. In addition, I regularly teach at intensive GCSE revision courses in the Easter holidays, so I am familiar with most exam boards: AQA; OCR; Edexcel and the Welsh Board.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to take a fairly informal approach in tutorial sessions. Students, however, will have important homework set in the form of re-drafting coursework pieces or timed essays. It is crucial that students are willing to put in the effort and commitment in their spare time in order to achieve the best results. Wherever possible, I will contact the student's English teacher to check on coursework progress and any mock results so far. We will then work, together, on the key areas for improvement.

About Dulmini:
I am a 2:1 graduate with a good grounding in both the arts and sciences, as I studied English, German, Maths and Physics at A-level, before going to the Kent Institute of Art & Design (now known as the University College for the Creative Arts) to study Architecture. I also work as a Sinhalese interpreter, video camerawoman, photographer, and meditation group leader. I'm also an amateur singer-songwriter and play guitar.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored children preparing for their 11+ exam, and currently teach adults the basics of Buddhism and how to meditate.

Tutoring Approach:

I'm friendly and encouraging in my approach, and am good at helping students understand concepts by using examples, illustrations and provoking discussion. Several adults who I teach Buddhism and meditation to are foreign nationals with poor english; so I communicate clearly, using stories and anecdotes, with lots of eye contact, facial expressions and hand gestures to get my message across.

About Prashant:
I am currently a medical student studying at Imperial College. Having just finished my 3rd year at medical school, I am now looking forward to tutoring from the youth of 5 years olds to 16-18 year olds preparing for a-levels and setting there sights on further education at University. My strengths lie in maths and the 3 science's subjects which I studied at A-level.
I am a very calm and friendly person, and thrive at helping others in any way or form I can. Being a highly motivated person, I find it very challenging to try and make students of all age achieve their full potential and achieve the success I have so far and beyond.

Teaching Experience:

Through out my educational career I have always tried to tutor those younger then me.
Whilst studying at Broomfield school (New Southgate) I performed as a mentor for students in year 7 and 8 (age 11-13)
When I was in 6 form my teachers happily allowed me to run after school revision sessions for students preparing for their GCSE.
Most recently, during the summer 2006, I was asked to tutor 2 of my GP's children for 4 months.
One of the children was a 7 year old boy, and the other was a 15 year old girl preparing for her GCSE exams.

Besides having valuable experience in teaching, having spent the last year studying at Chelsea and Westminster hospital and interacting with patients, I have gained valuable inter-personal skills and how to make people feel comfortable

Tutoring Approach:

As it has only been a few years ago since I finished my a-levels, I truly do understand how difficult it maybe for students to sometimes find things difficult, boring or just feel hard to get motivated to study. Because of this, my approach to tutoring is to try and make everything as interesting as possible. I always try to make my sessions as interactive as possible, since I believe this is the best way to learn. I generally try to split my sessions into 3 different sections compromising of:
1) First understanding the students knowledge on the topic
2) Teaching the student the topic
3) Providing questions to the student to see how well they have understood
I am also a big believer in having breaks during sessions
e.g. in a 2 hour revision period ill give the student a 10 minute break after 1 hour, making the whole session last 2 hours and 10minutes, but will only charge for 2 hours.

About Christopher:
I am a married father of two young children and hold a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Birmingham (specialising in Molecular Microbiology). For the past three years I have worked as a post-doctoral research scientist at Warwick HRI (University of Warwick).
I am enthusiastic about science and have always enjoyed explaining scientific ideas to others, whatever their level of understanding.

Teaching Experience:

During my scientific career I have been responsible for small groups of work experience students, demonstrating experiments as well as teaching the theory behind the practice. I have successfully taught various techniques to fellow scientists - students as well as more senior researchers. I have also given talks at scientific conferences, explaining concepts to people with varying levels of understanding of the subject.
I have recently tutored several A-level Biology students, and all my feedback has been positive, for example:
'My daughter found Chris to be very helpful and easy to talk to with regard to the aspects of the work that she was having difficulty with. He explained things well and took time to make sure that she understood. He always sent her homework between sessions and made sure that they were marked and discussed. Overall, I have been very impressed with him.'

Tutoring Approach:

I understand that each student has individual needs. I first identify the subject areas they are finding the most difficult. We then work together following the syllabus and I explain ideas to the student in different ways, using examples and visual aids. It is very important to use practice questions to both check their understanding and also build confidence in their own ability. This also helps to develop their exam technique.

About Emilie:
I am a French native speaker.
I have lived in England for 5 years where I worked as a French Assistant and as a Language Teacher after having obtained my teaching degree. I have moved to Edinburgh recently.

I would describe myself as enthusiastic, creative and hard working

I love discovering new places and learning new languages.
I love going out with my friends, going to the cinema (especially asian movies)

Teaching Experience:

From October 2001 until May 2003 I was a French assistant in secondary schools in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. I helped pupils to improve their spoken French.

From September 2004 until August 2006, I taught in a secondary school in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. I taught French and Spanish to pupils aged 11 to 18.
I enjoyed teaching the smaller ones because they are very enthusiastic about learning someting new. However, I prefer GCSE and A-Levels as they have more vocabulary and therefore it is easier to have a conversation with them.

I am currently tutoring a 13 year old pupil who feels that she doesn't learn enough at school.

Tutoring Approach:

my tutoring depends on the needs of the tutee.
Some people need to improve their spoken skills whereas some can spek a good level of French but might need more grammatical practice.

I do the tutoring only speaking French. It might seem scary but my previous tutees found it very useful because they got used to the words.

I have several textbooks some for beginners, some for more advanced levels.
I create my own resources as well.

I usually practise the 4 skills : listening, speaking, reading and writing but again if the tutee want to concentrate on only one I can do that as well.

About Marie:
I have been teaching French language and literature during five years in France.

I hold a CAPES (French equivalent to a PGCE) which allowed me to teach French language and literature in secondary and high school level to pupils from 11 to 18 years old over the last five years.

As part of my assignment, I also took in charge the language training of 7 English pupils during one year to help them to integrate the French education system. This experience reinforced my interest in teaching French as a foreign language and to introduce students to another culture.

Being a native speaker, students would benefit from clear insight into the French way of life and traditions. They will also become familiar with everyday conversation, writing and reading as well as French literature.

About Amy:
I am a 29 year old researcher at the Macaulay Institute in Aberdeen.

I work in the ecology research group and my main area of interest is natural resource management I am able to tutor confidently on environmental science, ecology, geography and to some extent, biology.

I have a BSc in Geography and an MSc in Environmental Science.
I have a good knowledge of contemporary global issues.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent time teaching environmental education both in the UK and in Brazil where I worked at a forest research centre for 2 years.

I also have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language Cetificate and I spent 6 months working as an English teacher in Rio de Janeiro with children aged 5-16 at a community centre in a favela.

Tutoring Approach:

I love to help children learn and help to build their confidence. I think independent learning is good, but also to give encouragement and to listen to children's needs.

I am patient and also believe in making learning fun, so with environmental things, hands on is sometimes best, but of course taking full notice of health and safety.

I also believe visualisation and creativity are good means of teaching. Visual tools such as maps, audio-visual displays etc can be very effective teaching aids. Also allowing children to develop their imaginations and artistic skills through painting, writing and construction are key.
