| About Helene: I am a qualified teacher of French and drama. I am originally from France and I qualified as a drama teacher in 1993. i am a lively teacher who likes challenging my students and who uses a lot of interactive techniques for learning like role-plays. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching in schools/colleges and privately for over 15 years. My private students last year exceeded all their expectations ( 2 A's, 1 B and 1 C)and I have an excellent knowledge of the GCSE syllabus ( Edexcel). I also often tutor as AS and A level with good results. I am an examiner for Drama and can help my students by supporting the written work which is very challenging both for Edexcel and AQA examining boards or improve their acting techniques or knowledge of the theatre practitioners. |
Tutoring Approach: - student focused, I start where the students and target the lessons to his needs and to the exam - informal and friendly tutoring, the students are responsible for their own learning and are treated as independent learners - thorough and demanding: I always teach some basic grammar so that students can make sense of the language, i use key words to develop knowledge and understanding |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Rebecca: I have just qualified as a teacher from Canterbury Christ Church University and I am now excited and very enthusiastic about teaching. I live in Huddersfield in Yorkshire now but I am willing to travel long distances to tutor. I am currently looking for a part-time teaching job so I can carry on private tutoring, as I have always wanted to help people who are struggling at school. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience of teaching from the age of 15, where I volunteered to work in my local primary school, I then continued to return to the school until I was 17 years old, whenever I had free periods from college. Whilst at University I worked with deprived children over a long weekend, to give them drama skills. After obtaining my degree I got an acting job travelling around Barnsley, Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent, promoting safe sex by doing a theatre in education play. This was done with 13 to 15 year olds and after every performance we would do workshops with the children. On my P.G.C.E course I did two long placements, my first was in an affluent area of Ramsgate in a reception class and the second was in a deprived area of Canterbury in a year two class. I passed both placements with both good and excellent marks. |
Tutoring Approach: Even though I am offering reading and writing tuition for primary school children I have experienced older children and adults who also struggle with these essential skills. I would therefore love to help whoever I could, as not everyone finds reading and writing easy. I use the sounds write approach, which is a mixture of jolly phonics and the blending of letters together to make words. This, in my experience, has created very positive results in learning to read and write. |

| About Helen: I have recently graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Biological Sciences. At A-level, I obtained A-grades in physics, maths (mechanics), chemistry and biology so I have a strong scientific background. I am currently based in Northampton, but will be moving to Leamington Spa from the end of September to do a Masters course at Warwick University. I would be happy to travel some distance (up to around 30 miles) for one-off or irregular tutoring, but this would not be possible on a regular basis. Regularly, I would be able to travel around 5 miles from Leamington on a weekly basis, or tutor in the Northamptonshire area once a fortnight. I can be somewhat flexible though so please get in touch. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught basic biology to large groups of students in Tanzania, as part of a volunteer programme. When in 6th form, I spent time helping lower school maths lessons. |
Tutoring Approach: Flexible, I would be happy to take a range of approaches, I think that an individual strategy for each student is very important. |

View Chris's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Chris: Just before I turned sixteen, I had to leave Winchester College, where I was attending on a scholarship, due to illness. I'm now twenty and in the intermediary period have had little to no formal education, leaving me severely unqualified in comparison to many of the other tutors available. Not the most promising start to this effective sales pitch, I'll be the first to admit, but I believe that I can still offer useful tuition, due to an enthusiasm both for learning and teaching, a large degree of patience and an ability to deconstruct complex ideas into more simple ones, or so I've been told. As I'm relatively new to all this, I suggest that, if you're interested in proceeding further, we arrange to meet for something of a (free) consultation, at which we can get an idea of, firstly, whether I might be able to help and, secondly, of whether we get along, which is also extremely important, in my view. |
Teaching Experience: So far I've only a few pupils. The first was a girl doing her common entrance exams. Our focus was on Latin, but we also touched on the Sciences. We met for about eighteen months, once a week for forty minutes to an hour. At the beginning of that time she was among the worst in her class at Latin; at the end she was by far the best. She achieved the grades she needed to and went to her first choice secondary school. I've also recently begun tutoring (through this site) two boys at opposite ends of Key Stage 3 (they're 11 and 14) in English and Maths, which is so far going very well. A small sample size, granted, and I don't boast to have any exceptional teaching ability with just that experience, but I am convinced about the benefits of one-on-one tuition and seem to be competent enough to let that run its course without causing too much of a detrimental effect. |
Tutoring Approach: Our sessions should be enjoyable and educational - within those parameters I'm extremely flexible. For instance, while I'll usually come prepared with an outline of what to cover, I'd much rather we meandered and explore something interesting that comes up rather than forcing ourselves to stick to a rigid plan. Similarly, I have no problems going completely off curriculum and off subject at times, as for me tutoring is as much about building a thirst for knowledge and self-confidence as it is about teaching facts or techniques. Of course, passing exams is often the key priority, but I believe that not only is becoming enthused by learning an excellent end in and of itself, but also that, when it happens, everything else falls into place much more easily and naturally. |

| About Chau: I'm Vietnamese but i can speak English fluently. I have done my A levels in the UK and got 4A in Maths, Further Maths , Physics and Economics. For Maths and Further Maths, I both got over 95%. I'm currently studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UCL. I enjoy helping people and have good communication skills. |
Teaching Experience: I haven't got any experience in tutoring, however I have been helping my classmates with maths and physics problems during my school times. |
Tutoring Approach: In my opinion, a good tutor should be able to identify the problems quickly and then be able to explain to student in the most simple way. I also think the tutor should be able to make the student feel comfortable, not put so much pressure on the student so that the student can work more efficiently. A good tutor also need to be patient and a good listener. |

Types of Tutoring: From their home / Online
| About Pavee: I am a 21 year old woman who has just completed her BSc Psychology degree and is now completing a Masters degree in Research Methods in Cognitive Neuropsychology. I have attended prestigeous schools and sixth form, where I have achieved high grades in all the major exams, prior to entering university. I am also a fluent French speaker and have top GCSE and AS-levels grades in this subject to go alongside this. I enjoy teaching children, both younger and older, and helping them become more comfortable with their school work so that they are able to be more comfortable in the school environment. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored young children (Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 3) in the past in French, Maths, Science, English and English as a Foreign Language successfully. I am still in contact with most of the children I have taught and they have done extremely well since. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that in order for tutoring to be successful, a bond has to be formed between pupil and tutor, whereby the pupil feels comfortable in expressing their concerns and the tutor will help them as well as encourage them. I respect children and hope that this will be returned but I do believe that I would have to work towards this. I am a friendly and outgoing person but am able to be strict as and when required! As I would like to enjoy the tutoring eperience, I hope to make the sessions enjoyable for students too. Clear guidance for study during the session, and any extra homework, will be given each week. This will enable tutor, student and parents to monitor progress. It also means that the sessions can be flexible to accommodate areas which need extra help. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Kirsty: I am 24 and since I was 16 have worked with children in some form. I still currently work in a creche and as a babysitter on occasion. I haven't tutored before however I have a range of teaching experience. I believe in being firm but fair and children respond well to it. Children work best when they are having fun and that is something I hope to incorporate into my tutoring. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently in my NQT year, teaching a Year 5 class. I have a range of abilities that I cater to there and things are going well. During my time in University I also gained experience in Years 1 and 3. I have been a nanny as well as a camp councillor and have a lot of teaching strategies from each of them. |
Tutoring Approach: I think it's important to go back to where children are in their learning, rather than where they should be. I think children learn best by using a variety of different meduims and ways. It's important to find out the best way that children learn and in one on one tutoring you are given the opporuntity to do this by focusing on the individual child. I teach in a way that is fun, relaxed and personal. |

View Glyn's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Glyn: I am a fully qualified English and Media teacher who graduated from The University of Reading with a degree in English Language and Literature in 2002. I have since gone on to complete my teacher training qualification (PGCE Secondary in English & Media) through Canterbury Christ Church University, Kent and have undertaken teaching posts in a number of secondary schools and colleges throughout the local area. I have also undertaken work and study placements at a number of different places, including The University of Las Vegas Nevada and London's British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). I am presently teaching English and Media to a combination of teenagers and adult learners at a local FE College whilst running a private tuition service, when possible, in my specialist subject areas. |
Teaching Experience: I am highly experienced in teaching learners aged 11 upwards, including adults. I have taught English at Key stages 3 (11-14) and 4 (14+) and am very experienced in preparing students for the SAT examinations in English (Reading & Writing). I specialise in making Shakespeare and poetry easy! For those learners looking to improve their writing skills as they bridge the gap between primary and secondary, I can also be of much help and support. |
Tutoring Approach: I offer a friendly and informal service. For younger learners who, are, for instance, preparing for their SAT examinations, I can offer an excellent service that can greatly enhance a student's confidence. I have a whole range of resources to support my private tutoring sessions, a number of which I developed and created myself! Many absolutely capable students often underachieve in examinations, simply because of insubstantial 'exam technique' training; I specialise in helping with this. I also like to offer regular feedback to parents on my individual student's progress and where particular areas of progress remain. I do this either by writing regular written 'reports' or through informal conversations, as and when is deemed necessary. I can travel to students who live within the Bracknell/Ascot/Wokingham/Reading area (25), or, for those who are able to 'come to me,' I charge 23. Most slots run for at least 70 minutes, so I can give my students time to settle in and recap on the previous week's work. In some cases, it can be advisable to have two students working together in one slot, as those young people with less confidence can sometimes benefit from working in a small team and being less 'on the spot.' It's also an excellent way to split costs (15 per student) - If interested, please call for more details. More than two or three students is usually not usually advisable. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Elena: I am a qualified teacher in Italian, Latin and ancient Greek and I've always been interested in languages, that's why I decided to attend the classical studies high school first (Liceo classico, where Latin and ancient Greek are taught for five years) and to enroll Classics at University afterwards. The only experience I have in tutoring students of Italian as a foreign language is with a girl from Switzerland at University level. It's been a rewarding experience for both. Though having a knowledge of Latin and Greek is not necessary to teach Italian, I think it may help. I'm trying to learn languages myself, so I think I know how many pitfalls a foreign language may have for a student. |
Teaching Experience: I've been teaching Italian language and Literature, along with Latin and Greek, in Italian Licei classici (classical studies high school corresponding to UK Grammar school as far as the teaching of Latin and ancient Greek is concerned) from June 2000 to June 2007, plus private tutoring at university level for a German speaking Swiss student. Coming to references the school principles I've worked with have retired or been appointed to other schools, whereas I'm still in contact with the Swiss student, she could serve as a reference. |
Tutoring Approach: I always try to provide enjoyment and intellectual curiosity at any level. I use to prepare a syllabus with the student, in order to meet their needs. I also try to be a good listener and to take into account students' tastes to 'use ' them as a teaching tool, i.e. if a student is a fan of Gianna Nannini (an Italian singer), transcripts of her songs can be provided and given as specific assignments for homework. In conversation, I create realistic situations in which the student can come across; in reading I focus on the standard of language used in public signs, advertisements etc. (that's quite interesting also for Italian pupils, since they can get a good grasp of the rhetoric used in commercials and of the way the State approaches the citizen). |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Lorenzo: I am Italian, aged 29, currently living in Brighton where I finished a MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems (including topics such as computer programming, mathematics, evolutionary studies, biology, neuroscience and philosophy). In my free time I am a Tango dancer (Argentinian Tango) and a photographer. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience is (unfortunately!) limited to: - teaching system administration to professionals (a 40-hour crash course on linux and system administration) - informally teaching computer science, networking and UNIX/Linux administration to fellows of the Linux User Group in Mantova (of which I am a co-founder) - volunteering to teach pupils upon request (in Italy) |
Tutoring Approach: Apart from love of science, the main reason why I enrolled into college the second time was to pursue the academic career and to become a professor. Even though my teaching experience has been limited due to lack of concrete possibilities (tutoring is much less common in Italy than in the UK), every time I had the chance to teach it was one of the most beautiful experience in my life. The joy of seeing the other person understand and learn (a skill, a theory, an application, a concept) cannot be compared to anything else. |

View Curtis's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Curtis: I am a young professional, recent English graduate, living and working in North West London. I am currently spending a lot of time thinking about careers and my professional ambitions and something that always comes up is teaching. I remember how frustrated I would get with teachers and classmates at school, because my learning style wasn't the same as everybody else's, which is inevitable in a class of 30. This is obviously the great attraction of one to one tuition and I would love to get the chance to pass on some of my knowledge. |
Teaching Experience: I have little experience of teaching, but having left university just over a year ago and completing my A levels in 2003, I am still in touch with the AS and A2 specs for English and am easily capable of brushing up on texts before meeting pupils. I also still have a lot of course notes and secondary reading material and I'd hope that, as a younger person, students might find tuition from me a little less daunting. |
Tutoring Approach: As I am new to this, I would be inclined to mimic the style of my good teachers at school, prepare handouts and visuals as well as going through essay structures and exam techniques for the student to keep in their own notes. Some close textual analysis of key passages in the text as well as more topline views of plots, themes and characters. GCSE, AS and A2 level specifications are widely available online and give detailed points of focus. I also have a lot of friends in the teaching profession who have given me example material, that differs minimally from the notes and handouts I have from A level and GSCE. I am a likeable guy with an energetic and honest personality. I have often thought about teaching and friends have urged me to do it. I am ambitious and successful in my professional life, but I am hoping that the chance to tutor might give me valuable experience to go into teaching within the public sector. |
