Since studying at an internationally accredited university enables you to get to know people from around the world, I came in contact with a lot of students whose mother tongue was not German.

Tutoring Approach:
Learning a foreign language and about a different culture can be a lot of fun. Although some rules, especially grammar, have to be learned by heart. I can offer you German classes with a lot of real life examples, such as music, films, literature, TV shows and magazines.
It is possible to learn about German politics and the German party systems through a vivid conversation which does not only enables you to understand German politics and history, but also upgrades your conversational skills.

I am a recently retired teacher with over 30 years of teaching experience. I have tutored privately for the past 20 years or so, primarily teaching maths at SATS and GCSE levels and chemistry at GCSE and Advanced Level. At any given time I normally have between 4 - 8 students of ages between 10 and 18 years. I am occasionally asked to take on adult students. I like to think that I get on well with my tutees, many of whom come on the recommendation of the parents of those I have previously taught. I strongly believe that one-to-one tuition is the most efficient and effective means of teaching, particularly for those who are less confident.

Teaching Experience:
I taught at an independent school in the West Country for over 30 years where I was at different stages a Housemaster, the Head Of Chemistry and Senior Master. I have been an examiner with the Edexcel Examination Board for the past 15 years. I still work for them as a principal examiner in A-Level Chemistry which involves the setting of examination papers as well as the management of a team of assistant examiners.

Tutoring Approach:
Students should be prepared to be be fully involved in the tutoring process and must want to succeed. I believe that in general I soon gain the confidence of my tutees, as it is important to develop a good working relationship with them as soon as possible. In many cases I find that I am coaching those who have lacked the confidence to progress properly in the large classes at school, or for some reason or another have fallen behind academically, perhaps through illness or from returning to the UK from abroad. Having experience of teaching both in a school and in a tutoring context, I know that much better progress can be made when the needs of the individual can be rapidly assessed and dealt with.

As a tutor, I have a kind, calm, open and relaxed style of teaching. After providing the initial information needed, the teaching that I do will be practically based, going through questions whilst I supervise, as I believe that the key to learning is through regular practice. As the students come across difficulties, that is when I tend to step in and provide help. This is however open to suggestion, as my style will be adapted to the student's personality.

About Gillian:
I am 32 years old and I have 2 young children. Before teaching, I worked in a Bank for 7 years, and have recently started teaching in the last couple of years. I find it easy to relate to children, and build a good rapport.

I currently teach a rage of abilities for KS3, across years 7 to 9.
I am currently teaching modular GCSE (foundation), and have also had experience of teaching higher tier linear GCSE.

I adapt my teaching skills and methods according to the pupils that I am teaching. I use interactive methods through ICT to enhance learning. I try to make learning as enjoyable as possible.

Gained my TEFL Teaching certificate in Madrid in 2002 and worked for International House and Windsor Idiomas for 2 years. Following this worked in Poland for 3 years at International House. In between contracts i have worked for numerous summer schools around the UK.

Tutoring Approach:
Step by step method towards an aim. Develop fun engaging lessons so the student is doing most of the work and they are enjoying it.
Each of my lessons are geared towards an aim for example vocab to improve reading skills etc.
Encouraging to those when they are negative and try to turn them around and change their negative beliefs.
Have different teaching styles for different ages of student from using flash cards with younger students to asking older student to explain their job in English.
Have talk exam and business groups and conversation classes
