I have been a private tutor in French in Edinburgh for just over a year; on average, during the academic year, teaching 8 - 10 students one-to-one at any one time. Experienced in all levels of tuition: Primary, GSCE, A-Level, Standards, Highers and Advanced Highers. I have also taught a number of adults during this time. Lesson times vary from one hour to an hour and a half depending on the student's requirements. Feedback has been very positive, most of my work comes from recommendations from existing students. Tutoring Approach:
I go with a professional yet informal approach. Especially with school students who have fallen behind in their French and whose confidence is low, I believe it is important to gain their interest and trust in order to efficiently improve their work. I follow curriculam requirements closely in order to effectively prepare them for exam questions but tailor exercises to their age and interests. I balance the work we do together with plenty of independent work for them to build their confidence outwith of working with a tutor. I use the first lesson to gauge the student's level, ask them which particular things they struggle with and from this map out subsequent lesson plans. I balance written, reading, listening and conversational exercises firmly in the believe that overall improvement requires competencies in all areas as they all effect each other: listening will improve your speaking and reading your writing and so on. Patience, professionalism and a sense of humour are vital in my work as a tutor.

I currently teach French in primary school via the famous franchise Le Club Francais, adults from beginners to advanced and I also prepare a student for her A-level at the moment.

Tutoring Approach:
Depending on the age, I will adapt the time spent with the tutee. I suggest 30 minutes for primary aged children (I will adapt myself to the child and his attention span), at this age I would recommend fun and interactive lessons. For very little kids I use puppets, flash cards, songs, etc.... the key word is flexibility on my part!!! Children also learn more if they can share the lessons with little friends their own age.
Older children, teenagers should be taught both grammar structures and vocabulary in a more structured way. I'll try to follow as much as possible what is done in the classroom if the child already has French at school. Otherwise, I'll adapt my lessons to what the parents are expecting from me (whether the child's parents are French and would like their child to discover French litterature for example). I can also create lessons for a special objectives like spending holidays in France with friends and family we'll then concentrate on specific vocabulary and situations.
For adults: there again it all depends what you expect from those lessons. Do you already have some prior knowledge of the language or not? Do you have some specific objectives like buying a house in France or spending your holidays there? I'll adapt to your needs. We may most likely concentrate on vocabulary and situations and include grammar in as we go along.

I have no official teaching experience, but have an informal knowledge of teaching as my mother and brother are physics and maths teachers respectively, as well as helping my cousins with GCSE and A level revision session. I feel as though i have picked up some skills beneficial to tutoring through discussions with my family as well as from teaching friends to snowboard whilst on holiday and when friends visited me in a French ski resort when i lived there.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is centered around a solid understanding of the syllabus and building confidence by starting with concepts central to the course and then building on this by focusing on the areas that the tutee feels as though they would most like to work on together.

My name is Sarah and I'm currently a Physics undergraduate studying at Leicester University. I have A Levels in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Further Mathematics aswell as an AS in Human Biology. My main skills are in maths and physics which I would be able to tutor to A level standard, I am also happy to tutor GCSE students and would be able to do this over a wide range of courses, particularly science and mathematics. Teaching Experience:
I spent my gap year teaching maths and science in a secondary school in Guyana, South America. This was up to CXC level which is equivalent to GCSE. As well as teaching years 8 - 11 in a formal setting I also provided after school workshops, home work help drop ins and one-on-one tutoring for struggling students. I hope to become a teacher once I've finished my studies so I'm extremely comitted to helping people learn.
