About Alex:
I am 37 years old and work as a freelance researcher. I provide online academic support to students writing essay assignments and dissertations. I thus write model essays and dissertations for A Level students, undergraduate students and post graduate students. Most of my writing work is in the area of law, religious studies, politics and english literature.

Teaching Experience:

I started teaching in 1990 as a post A level volunteer in Ghana. I did this for a year and did further teaching after graduating from the university as a qualified graduate teacher - 1997 to 1999. During this period I also did some home teaching. I started online tutoring in 2006 and lecturing in 2007. I still do online tutoring and lecturing.

Tutoring Approach:

I have an interactive approach to tutoring. I do not treat students as tabula rasas who need all the input from the tutor. Tutoring must be participatory enough to afford students to show what they know and by so doing build confidence in their intellectual abilities. Using a participatory and interactive approach includes asking students a lot of questions and allowing them to think and respond appropriately before adding to their knowledge when it is required. Giving students exercises also enables students to retain what the learn.

About Maiko:
I am a second year Psychology student at the University of York. I am an open-minded, patient and highly motivated person with some experiences in tutoring. I am Japanese, so my native language is Japanese, but I am also fluent in English.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English (as a foreign language), Mathes and Japanese before. I also helped some students get accustomed to entrance exam situations. People whom I taught these subjects varied from six years old to 65 years old.

Tutoring Approach:

I always try to keep in mind how I learned what I am teaching and what I struggled with when I studied what I am teaching. Looking through students' eyes often helps me understand better ways to teach and also makes the sessions more enjoyable.
I would like the students to not only study and memorise facts but actually learn for themselves. So I will try to make sure that I explain things properly until the student understand.
I may take different approach depending on the student's character, motivation and understanding.

About Helen:
I am 22 years old and have recently graduated with a BA(Hons) in English Studies at the University of Durham. In October I will be starting a taught Masters' course in twentieth-century literature at Reading University. But between July and late-September I will be based in Leicestershire.

I am a keen musician and play violin, piano and self-taught saxophone.

I took History to A2 Level and have covered most periods to a greater or lesser extent. At GCSE and A-level, this has included a more in-depth study of the Tudor monarchy and the rebellions and religious changes that occurred during this time; the Spanish monarchy in the same period; the events of both World Wars; the effect of the Great Depression (1930s) on Germany and the USA; and an overview of the Cold War.

I have taken Maths to AS Level and have a number of methods that are designed to help overcome the frustration and anxiety that is often felt when answers don't come easily. I also have a basic knowledge of French that would be suitable for tutoring someone in the fundamental principles and vocabulary of the language.

Teaching Experience:

I have done voluntary work at a primary school with children aged 4-7, assisting their learning through play and games, hearing them read, and ensuring that concentration is maintained during the tasks set them.

I have also assisted younger family friends with revision techniques for GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that the importance of being self-aware about our own learning styles can never be underestimated. Once we understand the particular ways in which we process, learn and express information, it suddenly becomes a lot easier to tackle the things that are thrown at us and to deal with specific areas of weakness.

With this in mind, my approach to tutoring will be largely focused on helping the tutee to develop tools that will allow them to become independent learners. I will tailor my methods to the needs of the tutee, concentrating particularly on material they feel uncertain about, but also looking at more general aspects if required or pertinent.

About Ambreen:
PERSONAL STATEMENT

It is pertinent to tell that by inheritance I am a born teacher i.e. in undivided India my great grand mother was the teacher, my grand father was the teacher. My father remained associated with teaching especially the academic and educational administration.

My journey of learning started from the very first day when I stepped into this world. My career started as an 'O' level teacher of English in the city school. I recognised my hidden talents of a teacher as well as a learner. I learnt to be more punctual and systematic under the rules of discipline of the city school.

Being a teacher I attained acceptability and respect from my students. During my stay in the school I learnt and realized that " a teacher is a good counsellor to". It was the nice experience to learn and practice in formal counselling to discuss their personal and academic concern. I also laid my efforts to build co-curricular activities which is an effective constituent of healthy learning. I was the head of English literary association and worked whole heartedly to improve the conversational and language skills of the student. For this I organized debate competitions, essay writing, drama (script & performance), poetry writing and elocution.

Besides teaching in the City School in Pakistan as a full time teacher I was also engaged in part time English Language Teaching in the Brilliant Tuition Centre in Pakistan.

I left my school on 17th of March as I got the opportunity to serve as teacher and further enhance my skills and gaining experience in UK, as I got a HSMP ( Highly Skilled Migrant Programme ) to UK.

I am looking forward to teach Secondary Level. Whatever I have gained in my three years I want to established and in the same manner learn and implement the teaching learning environment according to the desired needs.

About Laura:
I graduated from Lancaster University in 2004 with a First Class Honours degree in History. In my first year at Lancaster, I also successfully completed end-of-year exams in English Literature, a subject for which I gained a grade A at A level.

I am currently enrolled on a part-time MA in Historical Research and am hoping to apply for a Primary PGCE course in 2009.

Teaching Experience:

I worked as an Assessment Co-ordinator at KUMON MATHS from 1997-1999, a role which involved assisting children aged 4-15 with mathematics work. Although I am not offering to tutor a child in Mathematics as I have no qualification in the subject higher than GCSE, I believe the skills I learnt, for example, how to encourage individual children to reach their potential, motivation and ways in which individual children learn, will be invaluable in any work I undertake as a tutor.

I mentored a Year 7 pupil with learning difficulties and helped her improve her reading skills and increase her confidence.

I am also an Assistant leader at the Manchester branch of the Young Archaeologists Club, a role which entails helping teach children aged 8-16 about the past.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe it is important to instill confidence in pupils by allowing them to work in ways which suit them e.g. visual media, written word etc

One of the wonderful things about History and English is that, even if a pupil does not find the whole topic inspirational, something will connect with them and inspire them to learn. It is up to me, as the tutor, to find this and work with the pupil to broaden this interest.

Working one-on-one with a pupil will also give them the opportunity to ask the questions they cannot in the classroom and explore areas in more detail.

If a pupil has a particular problem e.g. essay writing, I am happy to work on these as well as the broader subject.

About Furqan:
I am currently studying for a MBBS & BSc at Imperial College London and at present am in my final year of a study. Medicine is a dynamic, creative, challenging and competitive field. It is a very demanding course and warrants a lot of hard work, commitment, responsibility and team work. I have undertaken numerous communication skills programmes and team work classes whilst at Imperial College which have helped me to further develop my people skills, this is particularly important as I deal with patients on a day to day basis, which I enjoy very much. Communicating efficiently with patients involves great skill and the ability to gain ones trust. I believe I exhibit all of these qualities in my academic, professional and personal life. I am a focused individual with great ambition, high standards and expectations and enjoy working in competitive team environments these qualities form the foundation of my success.

Teaching Experience:

I have written over 500 articles for a healthcare website and have been tutoring privately for the last 2 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to get the best out of each student, tailoring my teaching to their individual needs. Whether it be exam focused tutoring, or just some extra help, I'm enthusiastic and focused and want to make learning fun.

As well as standard tutoring i can help students prepare for medical interviews and provide them with some insider tips!

About Deirdre:
I am a student going into my fifth year of study at Trinity College Dublin. I completed the first half of my degree in Spanish in June 2007, receiving a II.1, and have spent the past year teaching English in France. I will be returning to Dublin in September 2008 to complete my French degree. I love languages and have always had a passion for learning languages and a flair for adapting them into my everyday life. I am also extremely interested in foreign cultures, literature and film. When I complete my degree I hope to continue my studies, concentrating on teaching, and become a foreign language teacher.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent the past school year in France teaching English. As I was working in 2 different schools (the french schooling system distinguishes between college 11-14, and lyce 15-18) I was able to gain the experience of teaching different age groups ranging from 11 years to 18. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and am delighted that my year abroad has confirmed my desire to go into teaching as a career.
While in France I also gave private one-on-one tuition in the evenings.

Tutoring Approach:

Due to the time of year, I am aware of many students needing last minute help before the big summer exams. I am willing to accommodate any student who may be having problems, and I will comprehensively work with them to ensure they can achieve the best grade possible
