Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Michael: I regard myself to be a self-made, self-styled individual who recognises the importance of learning and developing skills to advance yourself. That is how I did it! From growing up and attending school in rural Yorkshire, to moving south and attending University in Brighton, I've been fortunate to work with individuals from a variety of social and cultural backgrounds. I've also had my fair share of life experiences and feel these can compliment my teaching. |
Teaching Experience: Have been teaching Drama (practical and theory) in my own time for five years working with mainly 17-24 year olds. However I have also spent time working on projects with students at GCSE and A level. The teaching of English Literature goes very much hand-in-hand with drama. |
Tutoring Approach: For theatre, my approach is very much a combination of practical and theory. It is essential to compliment each area with the other, thus providing a balanced insight into the subject. I use a variety of resource books and texts, and use a diverse range of games and exercises to build confidence and stretch the mind. The teaching of English Literature requires an understanding of contexts; providing backgrounds for the author, the style, the sociological and cultural implications of the text(s) and knowledge of other related literary areas. A strong knowledge of literary devices and grammar is essential for extracting and analysing information from the texts; therefore this also forms an important part of the teaching. |

Types of Tutoring: From their home / Online
| About Simonetta: I do bespoke tutoring, the pupil tells me what they need and I prepare lessons accordingly. I'm currently developing an intermediate Holiday Italian course for a pupil, so if you are interested in that course I can tailor it for you (the course is not available commercially - I have developed it). I can also help you revise if needed. I'm a native speaker, so I can also provide conversation and practice if that's what you need. |
Teaching Experience: My background is in translation/media in the UK and private tutoring of children who failed their subject or needed revision when I was living in Italy (I moved to the UK in 1994). I have started tutoring adults recently as I need to work from home due to family commitments. |
Tutoring Approach: I try to engage the student using recordings, reading and different materials. I do tailor lessons to the needs of the individual. |

View Gemma's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Gemma: I am a very friendly, approachable person with a very positive attitude. I completed my degree in 2006, graduating with BA(hons) Religious Studies and Italian for which I received a 2:1 and a distinction for oral proficiency in Italian. I also studied Religious Studies and Italian at A -Level and GCSE. I have a PGCE (FE) from Cardiff University. I received a Distinction and was awarded Student of the Year. I am currently working as a Learning Support Worker which involves supporting students with a range of physical and learning difficulties. I am due to start working part time as a Religious Studies teacher after half term. Finally I have just started a Master's degree in Religious Studies as a distance learning student at Lampeter University. |
Teaching Experience: I spent a year living in Italy where I taught English as a foreign language to both children and adults. This involved working voluntarily with the University of Parma as part of the Lingua Project which aimed to encourage adults and university students to start or continue studies of a foreign language. During this time I was required to evaluate the materials available to students who attended the language centre and also create individual study plans for students who wanted to brush up on their English. I was also involved with creating tests to be used at the centre. Along with teaching the children this sparked my interest in teaching. When I returned to university I continued helping Italian students studying in Cardiff with their English. This involved meeting up for general conversation practice as well as proof reading essays and helping with academic language. In June 2008 I completed my PGCE(FE). This involved a period of teaching other students on the course and a Teaching Skills Assessment in preparation for a 5 month teaching placement in a college. My placement took place at Gorseinon College, where I taught AS and A2 Religious Studies with a focus on Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. I was responsible for the planning, delivery and assessment of a course of revision sessions as well as teaching a key text for the synoptic module. I received distinctions for all eight of the Teaching Assessments carried out during my placement. I am currently working as a Learning Support Worker which has given me excellent experience of working with students with physical disabilities and mild to severe learning difficulties. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a very student centered approach to teaching, as I believe this is better for the student's learning and general development. I like to encourage students to delve into the subject themselves by pointing them in the right direction rather than using the traditional talk and chalk method. This may involve setting a text for them to read and asking questions, or asking the student to research a topic during the session to then give a short presentation at the end. I also believe that it is important to listen to both the student and the parents about what they expect/need from me so I can adapt my style so it meets the needs of the student. I always take on board feedback so the student is able to reach their full potential. In short my approach depends very much on what the student needs from their tutoring. |

View Daniel's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Daniel: I'm a three-fold graduate of Oxford University: I studied Classics as a first degree, followed by a Masters in Ecclesiastical History, and am now finishing my Doctorate in Early Modern English History. This has given me a wide range of interests and specialist knowledge, as well as an insight into the (sometimes unexpected) connections between classics, history, and theology. |
Teaching Experience: I have done a reasonably large amount of informal tutoring - helping undergraduates prepare for exams or with specific problems. In addition to this, I have also done a smaller amount of teaching for various tutorial colleges, including revision courses for both GCSE and A-Level. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a firm believer that studying solely for examinations is a wasted opportunity. To access the highest levels of analysis, the student must have an appreciation of the wider issues and context, and this is something that I am most keen to encourage. However, that can only come with a firm grasp of the basic principles of any discipline, so that remains a first priority. |

View Antonia's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Antonia: I am a 25 year old female English Language and Linguistics graduate (BA Hons, University of Sheffield.) I live in the Hunters Bar area of Sheffield and currently do a mixture of freelance and agency tutoring work. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience tutoring one-to one at GCSE and Alevel level (English) and also experience in teaching English as a foreign language to International students. I have also taught reading and writing skills at primary level. |
Tutoring Approach: The most rewarding aspect of tutoring for me is adapting my approach in a way that meets the demands of each student. This means that I tailor my approach finely, to the particular individual. The first session involves an assessment of the student's learning style, so I can find out what best motivates them. For example, if they they are motivated by a target-driven approach, then we write down a list of achievable goals, and then periodically do a review to see if these goals have been achieved. I find this approach advantageous for monitoring progress closely. However, I also favour a less military approach in the case of students who do not work efficiently under pressure (me included!) I find this especially useful if students are experiencing extreme difficulties and need support rather than constant targets. I aim to encourage and motivate students in a way that enables them to reach their full potential, and also emphasise the importance of questioning and discussion in my lessons particularly in the case of Alevel subjects. I love rising to the challenge of improving a student's ability and assisting their success in the given subject. I think my style of tutoring reflects this. |

In 1999 I returned to university where I studied English Literature and Philosophy before becoming a teacher. I would describe myself as a calm and patient person who likes cutting through the nonsense that both students and teachers have to deal with on a daily basis. |
Teaching Experience: I currently teach at a secondary school in Norfolk and have seen dramatic improvements in exam grades in the last two years. I am also an examinations associate for Edexcel and mark papers for GCSE in Religious studies. I have however taught in many different areas since graduating in 2002. |
Tutoring Approach: I enjoy helping students to pass exams as well as equiping them with the skills to retain information. I usually take a back to basics approach and build from there. From my own experience I know that many students do not achieve good grades simply because they do not have any structure to their thinking or their work. However do not be decieved by all this talk about structure, I am very laid back and enjoy watching students progress at a pace and in a way that is right for them. I am very happy to work to the students area of weakness and will tailor make work to the individuals needs. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About melanie: I am French and I am 21. I studied English at university in France.Indeed, I passed my degree in English last june and during my third year , the university proposed the students to go to England as language assistants.I thought it was a very good idea and that it would be a wonderful experience. That is why i am working now as a French assistant in primary schools. I arrived in october and i really enjoyed both my job and the place I live in.The area is really beautiful. I would like to stay next year and to come back after to France to study advertising and have a master. Maybe later i will come back and do a PGCE to become a French teacher in England. |
Teaching Experience: -In france i used to give English private lessons to children( 6 months before i came to England) -I have been a French language assistant in England since october. -I have been giving private French lessons to an adult since november. -I was a rythmic gymnastic teacher for young girls in France during 5 years so it is another good teaching experience with children |
Tutoring Approach: use different approaches whether i tutor children or adults. With children it is good to use the approach "learning through playing" using games.. Children get bored really quickly so if a lesson is lively and dynamic the pupil doesn't really have the impression that he is "working"hard. Moreover, I know that to have a good sense of humor helps wheter the learner is a child or an adult. I can adapt my lessons according to the learner. I can teach any level and i am interested in teaching every level because it is good to have experince in different level. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Zahid: I am 39 years old with two children aged 9 and 11 years. I taught 5 years in Bradford before moving to peterborough in 1998. I play cricket at club level and also in the powerleague 5 a-side football. I was Bradford 'Open ' chess champion in 1985 but I only play on a casual basis now. I have helped to run education centres in Bradford and peterborough after school and on a Saturday. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching since 1992. I have extensive experience of teaching in different types of schools as a mainstream teacher as well as Head of Science. During the last year I have worked as a Science Consultant for a local authority working with staff and students. during the last 5 years I have been a GCSE exam marker and therefore I am very familiar with the requirements in order to achieve marks in external exams. |
Tutoring Approach: During the last 10 years I have seen how easy it is for young people to get distracted from academic studies due to the vast array of gadgets that they just have to play with. Tuition is about finding that mental block that is preventing learning and understanding from taking place. I try to give concepts and subject knowledge a reality that students can understand by giving analogies and models that they are more familiar with. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Joe: I am a 21 year old student in my final year at the University of Liverpool studying Comparative American Studies. This course covers a wide range of topics concerning the Americas, however I have focused on history and politics within this area study. I am an energetic, patient, and logical person with an optimistic outlook on life. I come from Bristol, but have spent a lot of time in North Devon as well. My interests include surfing, travelling, reading, music, camping, football, cooking, Latin America, and American history |
Teaching Experience: I have not had a great deal of experience in this area, however, I have three younger brothers whom I helped when taking their GCSE and A-levels. I have also gained valuable experience at a one-on-one basis working at a school for children with autistic spectrum disorders. Whilst this does not really include tutoring it has certainly helped me tune my approach to students and I have gained valuable experience in conducting productive activities and exercises with children and young adults. |
Tutoring Approach: I find the best way to learn is by breaking a subject down to its bare constituents. This helps to build a basic knowledge and foundation of a particular subject, which can then be built on with the finer details which will allow a student to achieve a higher grade. I like to discuss subjects informally (history in particular) which allows students to gain a fluent knowledge of a subject and enables them to adapt answers to suit any question which is thrown at them on the big day. I also like to use visual metaphors to help emphasise points and help gain a better understanding. I pride myself on essay writing skills and exam technique, I feel this is as important as the knowledge itself and can be applies throughout a students academic career. I believe that a low arousal, logical approach is the best way to learn. I am young, patient and energetic and I feel that i can connect with students due to the closer age gap. |
